I'm surprised this one hasn't come up yet.

Ever been to Horseheads, NY?

-Never been there but heard of What Cheer, Iowa. Sounds like a fun place!
My taste runs more to goofy cafe names. Our family used to frequent the "Tank-n-Tummy" gas station/cafe in Bayfield, Ontario, and passed by the "Squat-n-Gobble" somewhere else on a road trip. A latter-day bowdlerization drive once targeted "Whorehouse Meadows" in Oregon, naming it "Naughty Girl Meadows". The name change was brief then switched back by popular demand.

There is (or was?) a street in Nelson, Lancashire called Every Street. My grandma was fond of telling us that she used to live in Every Street in Nelson!

There's a place called Lost near here. Always gets it's sign stolen, and that was even before the TV series.

Orkney has a village called Twatt which I find quite funny.

And I always liked the yorkshire town of Beverly. Why decide to name the town after a girl? I think perhaps the person who named it originally just wanted to say they were "in" Beverly. But then my mind lies in the gutter.

Perhaps you were thinking of "Beaverly". (I built the gutter!)

I wasn't kidding when I said that there are lots of personal names used for town names in Texas. More male than female, though.

I wouldn't have recognized "Whon" as a name, and "Hub" might not be one, but there may be historical documents that indicate that they are. I think "Terrell" is a surname, as it's also the name of a county, and some others may be, too. I do think that Maypearl might be one that got left out of the list.

My mother used to live in Granite, Oklahoma, and later in Cement, Oklahoma, two of the hardest names in the state. Another town is Foyil, Oklahoma, which is barely a village, today, but was once a larger town with hotels and such.

In Oklahoma, off the top of my head, there's Idabel, Henryetta, Vinita, Alma, and Velma.

I thought of this thread last night while watching a documentary on the training of the British Household Cavalry: there was mention of a village called Wirepiddle (at least that's how it was pronounced - it's probably spelt something like Warpinghamdale).

There's a whole collection of Piddles and Puddles somewhere in the rural west of England. I suspect Steve Shaw can supply more precise details.

Grinn Ln intersects with Barrett Road here - the signs at the intersection get stolen all the time.......
