Toe-tapping

Post by Congratulations »

Okay, I wanted to try a poll, and I was wondering about the prevalence of toe-tapping in the trad world. Have at it.

I tap with my right heel but only when playing alone. I would imagine it might be annoying to others.

I play by taping my right foot, and sometimes my heel
I then came home, and went whistling all over the house, much pleased with my whistle, but disturbing all the family.

I am desperately embarrassed by this, but I have a hard time tapping
whilst playing in Irish music. This was never a problem in high school
band, but in session, I concentrate on the tune so much (especially
when it's particularly fast) that my foot will wonder if I don't keep it still.
It's really disconcerting. Even though I'm keeping the beat just fine
with my playing, my foot will go off on its own sometimes. Now, when
I'm just listening, there's no problem, and I'll do a left toe/right heel
(both simultaneous and alternating) kinda thing.

Tapping? You wusses. Stamp yer feet while wearing clogs. (If nothing else it'll annoy the bodhranista) :D
May the joy of music be ever thine.

I have a bicycle horn that I stomp on.

OK, OK, just kidding. I don't think I tap.

Once again, stifled by the lack of an "all of the above" choice.

Ditton to what Annie said. I put alternating as that is most common for me two years in a marching band and one in a Pipe band (with Pipes I have been a member longer) these will do it to ya.

I don't always tap, but when I do I'm right footed. I may excited and tap both for short periods of time.
Last session I was next to a bad bodhran"ist" - I was almost stomping just trying to play in time!

Tell us something.: Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Part of what I love about celtic/folk style music is the sound of a handful of handmade instruments that remind me of simpler times.

I voted "alternating" because I don't keep track of which foot is tapping, but I know they both move, and I'm not coordinated enough to tap together :-?

I have a hard time with toe tapping when playing fast music on the whistle; but you would think that it would be no problem if I can do it just fine on, about, 10 different instruments.
Cheers!

I've told new bodhran players this, and I do it myself when I play djembe. "Keep the beat with your buttocks". Like dancing in your seat. Get a little bouncy going with those suckers. The hands will follow naturally.
When playing whistle I don't have enough extra brain cells left for toe tapping (or any other part).

Hey... nobody said it had to be in actual time with the tune.
