I have a good friend whose uncle was a big time NYC lawyer back in the 40's and 50's. One of his tricks to distract juries was to stick a piano wire in his cigar, smoke it down without flicking the ash while waving it about over the heads of little old ladies, defendants, other lawyers and juries.

They would focus their attention on the ash rather than the testimony. It was a successful ploy... until smoking was banned in courtrooms.

The above picture reminded me of it. :D
