My childhood memories of Hallowe'en often were of light rain or drizzle, often of a wiener roast cancelled due to rain or even flooding.

I hear in the red light district it's called 'Trick-or-Trick'... weather permitting of course.

It's about 60 degrees here, and clear. Very nice.

I was a purple people eater too several years ago. I had a mask made out of a paper plate.

And the library is suspciously quiet tonight.

Well, it's been dark now for about an hour. How pathetic is that?

Look at this:

October 31, 2005
Actual Time Rise: 6:41 AM EST Set: 5:47 PM EST Length Of Visible Light: 11h 54m
Length of Day 11h 06m
Tomorrow will be 1m 27s shorter.

There were some large groups of . . . persons . . . roaming the streets in costume. Carrying sacks, yes, but these persons were large enough to be looters. I mean, HUGE children. If they were children. I was glad to be in a sturdy vehicle of the sort that discourages tipping.

Our community police were out in force, as well, stopping party-goers as they flew down our main drag. It's a couple of miles of 4-lane sleek curves . . . without cross streets to speak of . . . the kind that just inspire speeding. Only, the speed limit is 35. Hahahahaha!

And we're serious about it. We keep our own police rather than use the county sheriff because it lets us host our own speed traps. Tonight, they had flashing red and blue lights all over. It was very festive.

There were sociopaths lined up on the side of the road waiting for their tickets.

It's rainy and chill here tonight, but there are a few kids who are braving the elements.

I hope everyone has a safe and a happy holiday.

Happy Halloween, Good Samhain, and Happy New Year!

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

And if you did, how do you feel about chocolate . . . mmmmm! . . . coated sheep?

8:30 pm. It was a bit warmer than usual tonight, about 50. The rain held off until about 15 minutes ago.

We've had 41 kids so far. My daughter just got back with 6 pounds of candy (182 pieces) and 50 cents that someone gave out because they ran out of candy.

We'll probably shut the porch light off and call it a night around 9.

I finally had the last visitor at 9:30. We had fewer kids than last year, and
they were more spread out in time, but it was still a pretty good number.
Mostly little ones, but a few pre-teens showed up with no costumes. I assume
they were all going as homocidal maniacs (they look just like everyone else...)

Lots of kids had pillowcases as bags. That's a new one on me. Many of these
looked fit to burst. I guess the neighbors were handing the stuff out by the
handful since the kid count was down a bit.

It was a beautiful night; it would have been good for stargazing, but the light
pollution was terrible, what with all the porchlights.

All in all, my cynicism was not increased for another year. (Matter of time...)
Samhain mhath, everybody!

I think the neat thing about Halloween in my neighborhood is that it displays
our multiethnicity. Several Asian-American children came by, a Hispanic
family, quite a few children from the Indian subcontinent (some more
recently than others, judging by accents... and "Trick or Treat" is an
awesome phrase when a 2-foot-tall SpiderMan says it in Bengali accent!)
Some of these children came in mixed groups (kids have no time for bigotry
when there's candy to be had!) I think we have a large number of H1-B work
visas compared to the rest of the state due to all the high-tech jobs in and
around Research Triangle Park, NC. But I still think it's pretty good for a
small suburb in North Carolina.
