I Don't Know What a Blog Is

Post by Walden »

Don't get me wrong. I've seen Dale's, and a couple of others that people have shown me, and I've heard it's short for "web log," but I really don't understand the concept.

Is it an online diary? Is it a list of links to current events articles? What is it?

Should I get one?

Yes, sort of,

Why not. As far as I can tell, it is a way to keep friends updated on what's been going on in your life, an online journal etc. It would be a neat place to put poetry, Origami, Ocarinas and the like.

I believe that Walden could do a really great blog.

That very reasonable personality combined with his great knowledge of so many subjects would be essential reading here.

Go for it Walden

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

A blog is completely about whatever you would want it to be about. You can say anything you want. And people can choose to read it or not. Or comment or not. Most are drivel, some are great. It's free expression in its purest form.

I'm glad it's not just me. I'm always about two years behind the latest trend. :(

If you want one, just make one at http://www.livejournal.com or http://www.greatestjournal.com

The first one is more popular, but they're basically the same website; they use the same source code. You can write whatever you want in them, basically. Talk about your dog, post pictures, artwork, writing, whine about politicians, whatever. They're pretty random.

Blogs pretty much consist of "these are things I want to share with other people". My wife has one that mostly is about fanfic. My roommate has one that deals with knitting. I have a friend who has a blog that is 90% filled with those silly online quizzes from quizilla. Some folks blog about news that's important to them.

It's a place to go when you need a clap or a pliss, innit?

I don't think I've gotten any of those GK.
(I take that back. The "comments" which are sometimes posted to my blog which are actually computer-generated spam ads, definitely fall into the clap and pliss category. Thanks D.)

hehe. What a shame for that poster that there's no such word as "Indestoppable!!"

Or "Undeplorable".

Or "Indeepfriable".

As others have noted, you can make it whatever you want. But in technical terms it's a personal web site where it's really easy to add stuff as often as you want. You don't need to know much more than how to type. Whether your blog is outstanding or, um, average depends almost entirely on what you have to say.

Some folks here have recommended livejournal, and I'll add that livejournal is a site which really focuses on a certain type of blogging — personal social networking. If keeping a list of online "friends" is important to you then livejournal is the place to be. If you're interested in other sorts of blogging — posting links of interest, essays on music, etc. — then I'd suggest a different service.

A good place to start is the Open Directory's list of blog hosts.

Yes, I think there should be more ITM blogs. Mine is linked below.
