some good news
I just want to share because I'm happy with this:
In my German class, even though I've missed class the entire last week (due to doctor's appointments and meetings with my counselor and advisor), and been suffering in all my classes, my midterm grade is A-!!
My other classes don't have grades posted yet, but since I've been sick I fully expected to have Fs in all my classes. Hahaha. When taking German classes, I've found, it helps to have Anabaptist and Mennonite Friends. An A- is still a sort of A and it made my day to see that. La la la la la.
/end randomness

I have the highest grade in the class, but I still don't think I'm "good," because I have so much trouble speaking and understanding. One day I inadvertantly said I was 18 feet tall (because I'm not used to the metric system, I said I was 6 meters tall), and on a paper I turned in, I was describing myself and, saying I was blue (i.e. sad), I accidentally said I was drunk instead.scarhand wrote:way to go Cran!!
maybe the german gods have taken pity on you, . . .or maybe they wish you would take pity on them/him/her and stop praying in german
just kidding. you must be good to get an a.
Reading is easiest, but speaking and understanding are more difficult. They take longer, particularly if you're not around people who speak the language.Cranberry wrote:I have the highest grade in the class, but I still don't think I'm "good," because I have so much trouble speaking and understanding.
Students often try to evaluate their progress from the perspective of the final goal, rather than from the immediate goal. That is, they look at how far they still have to go and that diminishes their accomplishments.
What's important is where you are NOW. Week 1, you should have learned what was on for week 1. Week 2, you learn week 2. Week 3, week 3. And so on. As long as you learned that, you're ok.
Everyone starts out slowly. Everybody learns a little bit at a time. Nobody expects you to sound like a native speaker in just a half a semester--all you can possibly do is learn the material that's appropriate for that half a semester. If you do that, you're doing good.
Congratulations. It's an accomplishment.
Even if you do get F's in the rest of your classes, just ignore it and focus on the classes next week and the next. If you have to get tutoring, do so. It is possible to overcome a slump. I don't think you'll get F's, though.
Aren't you going to thank me for doing all that research for you on why you had to refrain from liquids after taking your iodine pill? I went to a lot of trouble to do that, you know.
And, I should mention, I didn't always have that ability, nor did I develop it in half a semester. Far from it. That skill took YEARS. Literally, I have been practicing, oh, ages and ages to get to the point that I could do research like that. I like to keep in practice so that my skills don't get rusty. Anytime you need medical research and data analysis services like that, just let me know. I'm more than happy to assist.

from what I understand, German is a hard language to learn. I, unfortunately, only remember a word or two from my grandfather speaking it (and they are words not appropriate for most people!).
Remember, you didn't learn to speak English in 10 weeks - and your mind was much more "malleable" then. You won't learn German in 10 weeks - but you have a great start.
Don't worry about the other grades.

Congratulations Cranberry!
Der Schwamm ist nicht nass.
Das Telefon klingelt.
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben,
Meine Mutter, sie kocht Rüben,
meine Mutter, sie kocht Speck,
Und du bist weg.
Nice counting rhyme!
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieb'n
Eine alte Frau schnitt Rüb'n,
Eine alte Frau schnitt Speck,
Schnitt sie sich den Finger weg.
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben
In der Schule wird geschrieben,
In der Schule wird gelacht,
Bis der Lehrer Pitch Patsch macht.
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieb'n,
Wo ist denn mein Schatz geblieben?
Ist nicht hier und ist nicht da,
Ist wohl in Amerika.
Since you asked for spelling:emmline wrote: Der schwamm ist nicht nass.

Oh, and this:
Ein, zwei, drei, vier, funf, sechs, sieben, (spelling?)
Meine mutter, sie kocht ruben,
meine mutter, sie kocht speck,
Und du bist veg.
Der Schwamm ist nicht nass.
