Before I quit that stuff, I used to be into nomenology, which is the practice of finding hidden messages, or meanings, values, predictions, and the like in people's names. I still get nomenology and numerology confused because the names are so similar.

James Randi (The Amazing Randi) once taught a college class in which he had the students fill out a questionaire to be used by an astrologer in creating personal profiles. When the profiles were all done, he distributed the results to the students and asked for an evaluation. Virtually all of the students were quite surprised at how very accurate the profiles were.

Then he revealed that they had all received a copy of the same profile.

Make what you will of that.

The same thing was done in psychology. A psychologist gave a HTP (house, tree, person) drawing test to a group of introductory psych students. He told them he would give them personality profiles after the drawings were scored. Then he gave everyone the same personality profile. When the students rated their own profiles, over 90% said that that the results on target. A friend of mine used to replicate this every year to demonstrate the hazards of vague, generalized personality statements.
