K&Q B set

Post by glands »

I noted the K&Q 3/4 set in B is for sale once again as listed in the recent NPU rag. The set is surely acquiring a history of ownership. Imagine the stories it could tell!

I don't get that "rag" anymore. Is there an asking price?

Asking price is $6000. Rosewood chanter, boxwood drones, pearwood regulators according to the advert. Set is five years old.

This set was first owned by Tom Kennedy...then Lorenzo....and now by at least two different people in Europe if memory serves me correctly.

The chanter doesn't look like it's rosewood but the drones could be boxwood and the regulators could be pear.

My assumption is that that is the set but that assumption should be verified. Perhaps a "chanter switch" was made along the way. JOBM ought to be able to provide details at either one of the tionols.

The chanter above was made of ziricote and as dark as it looks. I suppose someone could confuse it with rosewood if they'd seen rosewood that was especially dark, but the rosewood chanters, flutes, and other instruments I've seen don't look like ziricote at all. For a stop key, the chanter has a violin like peg through the reed cap. Picture is here on D'Arcy's uilleannobsession.com/extras_k&q page.

NPU must have a separate listing in their magazine, apart from the classified ads online at http://www.pipers.ie/en/ads.lasso --at least I don't find it there.

In the case of the current seller, he states that harp is his primary instrument and that he bought the set on a whim, more or less. However, one must wonder why the pipes keep changing hands.

Tom Kennedy (the Maine-based piper) used to have sound clips of this instrument up on his personal website. There is nothing and I mean nothing wrong with the sound of this set.

Lorenzo can vouch for that.

There was a lot of discussion when this set was up for sale a while back. David Quinn had sold it off as a 'proto/experiment'. Nothing wrong with the sound. The set would have an unusual aesthetic but one sees unusual sets out there. But 6K is still a sizable investment. Will this set appreciate over time?
