Yodeling

Post by Jack »

I've always wanted to learn to yodel and I read mention of yodeling in another post so I thought I'd ask here.

Who are your favorite yodelers?

I'm taking (non-yodeling) voice lessons next semester. After I progress enough I want to try to learn to yodel. Any advice? Are yodeling instructors different from regular voice instructors?

Etc., etc...

Tell us something.: From the land beyond beyond. From the time past hope and fear. I bid you, Genie, now appear! Well, the Genie did not appear but the notification to type at least 100 characters did so I am back and typing some more as you, if anyone actually sees this, can probably tell.

Thomas also took on many of the spiritual teachings of the time, and attributed his yodelling style to the manifestation of the spirits of his ancestors, which he discovered by chance when he was unable to sing conventionally following an accident while practising yoga.

Whoops! :o

Yep, it's true. Yodelling was invented by a Tuvan throat singer who'd had that accident. :D

I don't want to know what kind of accident it was.

Probably a good thing I signed up for samba lessons this fall instead of yoga . . .

Who are your favorite yodelers?
Jimmie Rodgers, Patsy Montana, and Bill Monroe, though I'll admit that Eddie Arnold did an impressive job on Cattle Call. Don't care so much for Elton Britt.

Knock yerself out:

Actually a google search found tons of yodeling sites. There are instructional videos etc, but the one I listed above is free and looks pretty good. I'd try it right now, but my wife's still sleeping...

This looks like just the ticket for you: http://www.yodelingtheresa.com/

BTW the best yodelling I have ever heard (and its associated side effects) was in the movie Mars Attacks.

Cran,

Warning. You should be aware of the following statement buried deep in the non-english version of the web site, from which I have rendered this somewhat free translation, “Traditional yodeling is best practiced after a hearty meal consisting of one our famous Swiss “hunter’s platter” that has generous portions of veal, pork, lamb and chicken. A side dish of pickled or fresh fish is also highly recommended to help the student yodeler condition his/her jaw and throat to practice making the melodious sounds of our beloved national music. Without proper protein conditioning, accompanied of course by liberal amounts of strong beer, the yodeling student cannot develop the vocal stamina true yodeling requires and can only hope to achieve a pale imitation of the glory of this art form.”

Just kidding. I do respect your non-carnivore choice. Really. Don’t be mad.
