Well, I know what it means in that much. But I don't really understand what it's supposed to mean when people say a person is contrary.

It means you do things to piss people off.

Not things which aggravate others, exactly, but do them to aggravate others. Things which are contrary to, or the opposite of, what they asked you to do, want you to do, or need you to do.

Keeping rodents in your dorm room, for instance.
