Míle maith agat Mickey.

Nice playing there boy! Sorry dont know the tune!

Unusual artifact in the sound produced by
that whistle. Seemed to have an undertone
resonance of some sort - or maybe it was
a resonance from the room or recording.

I just got one of the polycarbonate whistles yesterday. At that price it was totally a matter of curiosity. Interesting material, but way too much 'hiss' in the whistle for my taste. If you blow hard enough some of the airishness leaves ... but that's too much like work! :D

But he does ship very fast & seems a nice enough person. If someone likes a whistle that can take being played hard ... try it -- it fits the bill.

Thanks very much for the kind words (and you too peeplj). The resonance was mostly from the whistle, though the room added to it a bit. I think if Rick cuts through that in future models, the tone will be excellent.

I do like that characteristic in my whistles (having to blow hard to get it to work), so I guess this one was right up my alley.

Cheers!

Polycarbonate whistles

Post by Rick Hinck »

Hi folks, I am new to this sight, and fairly new to whistle making.
Yes, the ugly polys are my handiwork. Sorry about the pictures, they will get better as will my whistles, always I hope.
This is not meant to be an advertisement. But I do hope you all end up with one of my whistles some day. And if you do please let me know what you think, the feedback helps me tremendously.

My band director (trombone player) always called it a "water key."

Hi Rick ! Welcome to the board ! It's always nice to see a new whistlesmith throw his hat in the ring. I just bid on one of your polycarbonate whistles on Ebay. I'll drop you a line when it arrives and let you know what I think. Best of luck ! :)

Have a Great Day and Fun Whistling !!

Dude, I don't think they are ugly. I think they are cool looking. Keep on putting them up on eBay and I'll end up getting one sooner or later. I'm whistled out for a while now though.

I also looked back on your eBay history and saw pictures of your copper whistles. They look tight as heck man! Everybody seems to be giving you good feedbacks too. Keep up the good work.

Maybe you should send one to Wanderer and let him review it!!

I wasn't comparing them at all. I was just saying the word spit
didn't seem to bother the brass players...

whistles

Mr. O'Gill, thank you for the kind words. It is always nice to be encouraged.
I fear though, as I am new to the whistling community, that I do not know who the Wanderer is.
Right now I plan on throwing some whistles over to Mickey McNamara, He seems like a no nonsense honest guy and I think he will be up front with me about my instruments, I really value that. Though, he did tell me he was just an amateur, I think he is much more than that.

Rick, check out this page. Wanderer in an old-school member of the internet tinwhistling community. He is sort of like the resident reviewer of the cummunity. He also posts on here a lot. In my book, he is a vast storehouse of knowledge and a great resource.

Thanks for the kind words...
Though about the only thing I'd call "vast" about me is my expanding waistline :)

I have been playing about 10 years, and have had a lot of whistles pass through my hands, though. ;)
