Hi folks,
I don't know much about whistles, I bought some Clarkes (one Sweetone, one Celtic) and a Generation, my boyfriend has a Clarke, that standard black one. I like them but mostly for my curiosity, what would be a good whistle when I upgrade? It has to be at reasonable price and be easy to play. It also has to be possible to buy it online, don't think there are so many whistles around here in Sweden. Would you buy a whistle online? Do people try whistles before buying as with stringed instruments?

Re: Upgrade
I'm with Screech on the Burke, though I'd say DBSBT, Very easy to play, beautiful to look at and to listen to, and not so high end as to be too high priced (right around $150 USD).ennistraveler wrote:Hi folks,

Micheal Burke makes fine whistles, as do others, and most of the folks making good high end whistles not only have a quality you can count on, but a guarantee, and will work with you if you should have one of the very rare problems. They have no trouble selling their whistles because people know they will get a very satisfactory result. Be sure to check out the whistle reviews here at C&F. All are available online, as far as I know.

And yes, Stacey does make the most bodacious fipples! I will one day own one.

- Tell us something.: Longtime member of Chiff and Fipple. I own/have owned more whistles than a person should, I think. But I’m not complaining.

Two whistles to consider:
O'Briens: http://www.geocities.com/foley8/index.html (You can get a whole set for a very decent price. They've recieved very good reviews and are one of the best buys on the market in my view.)
Hoovers: http://home.bresnan.net/~mackhoover/ (You can buy the Whitecap or Blacktop to go on existing bodies or buy one one of Mack's own whistles--very sweet sound.)
Both sites have clips so you can get a sense for how the whistles sound.
Happy hunting. It's always fun to figure out what you want from the many different choices.

- Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.
If you basically like the sound of the whistles you have, but are looking for a more stable or refined sound you may consider a tweaked Sweetone ($15 on ebay) or Generation (about $35 on ebay) from Jerry Freeman. He also makes the MellowDog (cross between a Feadog and Mellow D) for about the same pricing.
After that there are several whistles in the $100 and less range that would be great upgrades: Humphrey, Black Diamond, Hoover to name a couple.
