Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Personally, I don't think those faces are making things easy for the biometric standards software.

Don't laugh: it's our fault they can't smile. These "biometric passports" in Europe are being instituted under pressure from the USA.

It's a silly idea anyway: if you want a picture with a neutral expression to aid in automatic face recognition, you don't need to make that the main passport photo. You could just have the passport people take a neutral picture, extract feature data and store that separately on the passport, e.g. in a barcode. Then tell them to smile for the real photo.

Canada started the same thing in 2003:

On the other hand Germans don't have anything to smile about these days anyway. Certainly the election this Sunday is not making anybody laugh..

G's that image made my stomach churn!

Not long now and it'll be bar-code tattoos and chip-and-PIN implants. Very handy at border crossings and supermarket checkouts.

Caj is right. The same "no smiling" rule has been enforced in the UK as well just so we can have the biometric passports required by the US. So thanks a bunch for that, guys. :x

We're trying to get passports just now for our three kids, who now cannot travel on our passports for the same reason, and have just had one of the applications returned because the picture doesn't meet the requirements. Apparently our daughter had the temerity to look very slightly to one side and smile a bit.

SHE IS THREE YEARS OLD!

For the love of God, has anyone tried to get a three year old to sit still and hold a neutral expression long enough to take a picture!!! Honestly - I despair!!! What planet do the jumped up wee bureaucrats who come up with this bollogs come from?!? Have they got nothing better to do with their time than invent stupid little rules like this that do nothng except make our lives just that little bit harder?!?!

:x :x :swear: :swear:

I'm going to have to go and have a lie down now.

So, does this mean that to defeat the facial recog software all I have to do is smile and perhaps whistle a tune whilst committing my crimes?
