Tunes that put me in a wistful mood

Post by Martin Milner »

I was just running through a few old tunes this week and came across a couple that move me to neither happiness nor sadness, but definitely move me:

Yearning - by Sarah Shaw of this board (whwre are you Sarah?)

Brooke Benton - A Rainy Night In Georgia ("Lord, I feel like it's rainin' all over the world.") It gets me every time I hear it -- although it's been a while.

Oh, God, that's not whistful, that's absolutely depressing. I haven't heard John McC's version, but have it on an album by Aengus (One of the Keanes and Robbie O'Connell). This one is right up there with Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis by Tom Waits.

Back to MarMil's original theme, tunes. Some waltzes that move me:

Another wedding waltz, Waltz of the Lilies, by Katie O'Brien of Deanta. She walked down the aisle to it.
Valse Frontenac, a Quebecois waltz that Chris Norman does on a low-A flute. I'm getting an A flute just to play this (actually, there's also a Mazurka that Frankie Kennedy plays on an A flute).
The New Land

Some non-waltzes:

The Sunset, a slow reel by Cathal McConnell that Altan do.
Gye Fiane, a tune in triple time from the Neal collection that the Baltimore Consort do, with Chris Norman and Custer LaRue taking turns
Farewell for Evermore, a tune I found in the Joyce collection that I've never heard anyone else play

Many others.

I guess I'm not easily depressed.

A tune which I find very moving, but neither cheerful nor depressing, is Port na bPucai.
Giles: "We few, we happy few."
Spike: "We band of buggered."

Thanks Chas! I've found Valse Frontenac on The Session, I'll be giving it a lash at lunchtime! Nice one!
