My mother brought me back a calendar from her last trip to Dublin. Each month has a black and white photo of an Irish writer: Synge, Beckett, Joyce, Kavanagh O'Casey, etc. Except for the guys wearing hats, they all have very disheveled hair. Were there no combs back then? At least I can use them as an excuse for my own inattentiveness.

It's the equivilant of today's "beard stubble" look. An affectation indicating a person too engrossed in <whatever> to worry about piddly things like hygene. Ive just done a bit of Googling and found out that the statue of Brendan Behan was unvieled after my last trip to Dublin so I have not seen that one yet. I would have put it all together had I known about it but I was baffled about how somebody could mistake the Kavanagh for anything else
I'm be over there at the end of September and I'll take a pic of the Brendan Behan - I can't find an image on Google.
Behan was born and reared not too far away from there so it all adds up now.
