Some years back, a friend of mine was trawling through my CDs and asked to borrow Steely Dans "Can't buy a thrill".
"Take it ..it's brilliant" sez I.

A few weeks later he brought it back and said he liked it but they were much better when they had that Bird singing with them.

"What Bird?" sez I.

"Y' know...the one that sang All around me Hat " Sez He.

I hadn't got the heart to correct him so I just changed the subject.

I kid you not :roll:

There is one song that always makes me just stop and listen, "Wilderness Love" by Samppa Saarinen. You can download it here for free (and it's 100% legal).

He's also uses tinwhistles in some of his songs too.

Hey, I checked this spelling before posting!! There are loads of Google double-Ls, but you're right - I've just checked in the Penguin CD guide. That's a fiver I owe you (I always challenge my family to catch me out on spellings, the reward being £5. I've never had to pay up!). You have to collect in person though. What a brilliant piece though, one L or two!

Come to think of it, Allium's garlic isn't it?

...oh, and it's "aluminium" this end. Touché!

It's been a while since I felt "transfixed" by recorded music, but I remember feeling that way back in the day listening to my first Bothy Band album.

I feel that way more often when I am in a session. Session music leaves me transfixed on a regular basis, sitting bemused and sometimes (if it's really good) feeling an ache in my heart like being in love.

It's nice to discover another Flamenco-lover out there. My favorite Flamenco disc, if I had to name one, is one by Fernanda and Bernarda de Urtrera with Juan Maya Marote accompaning. Number two would be the live album Camaron Nuestro. Just Camaron and Tomatito. That one gives me goose bumps.

Other musical selections that do the same are:
Va Pensiero, an aria from Verdi's Nabucco
E Scende le Stelle, from ......I'm blanking - it's old age
An arrangement of Debussy's Claire de Lune for two guitars played by Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya
and lastly, from an album called Baroque and on the Street in which lots of Vivaldi, Bach and other things are played very tastefully on guitar, banjo, harmonica and soprano sax, which is my favorite cut, played exquisitely by Jane Ira Bloom.

Sorry to put a strain on your stitches Cowtime but what is even funnier - in my twisted mind anyway - is that very few English Folkies know that "All around my Hat" is an Irish rebel song written by the man who wrote the Irish National anthem and he was also Brendan Behans uncle.
I take great delight in pointing this out when the occasion arises and the usual response I get is "Are you sure about that".

I wouldn't exactly call myself a Flamenco fan as such, but the NY Capital District is blessed with an absolutely phenomenal Flamenco/Classical guitarist named Maria Zemantauski. She is an exciting performer, and a really great woman on top of that. Check out her site: http://mariazemantauski.com/ , and listen to some of the sound clips.

I don't say it lightly that I think she's one of the best instrumentalists that I've ever heard, any time, any instrument. Much of what she has recorded is original, and all of it is first rate.
