I only knew him through brief email correspondance and some poetry he shared with me. He was obviously a remarkable man, and I really wish I'd been able to get one of his whistles... A sad loss to the world at large, and especially the whistling community. My heart goes out to his family.... I think he must have been an excellent husband and father. May his soul fly free.

Glenn sent this to me once...for those who have never had the pleasure of reading his poetry:
ATLAS WALKING
the wheels of the world are turning, turning
around in their well-worn way,
and each squeal of an axle, each squeak of a joint
is a voice in the roundelay
that sings of a small solar system
at the edge of our galaxy,
which cares not where it came from
nor how large it might come to be.
for the distances grow greater
with the passing of each age,
and aeons pile upon aeons,
confounding all clock and gauge;
and the trek to our nearest neighbour
is farther than lifetime can span,
and seven-league boots can scarcely leap
to the next in the time of man.
we belong to a universe breathing,
still exhaling as we speak;
then might it expand, but only
‘til its impetus grows weak,
then take pause in its expansion,
having nowhere further to roam,
and halt to hearken the Core of All
calling its children home?
and who is to say, as the Hindu believes,
this hasn’t occurred before,
that celestial tide has been ebbing and flowing
through countless times of yore?
and might it be that the Seer of All
takes delight in watching the toy
as it grows and shrinks in the Nothingness
He created when He was a boy?
the imagination staggers
at bearing so gross a load;
and the human spirit can only return
to the parcel it left in the road
after walking in perfect silence
‘mid the morning grass dew-pearled
and hearing the muted thunder
of the wheels, the wheels of the world.

Very sadly...
I had no honour to know him, but heard good about him whistles much...
The person who makes such tools should live in memory of people.
When we play on him whistles, we with a heat shall recollect Glenn, and the soul of him will be glad in heavens...

Here is a note I received from Glenn a few months ago.
Golthorpe.
aw jack, this is very cool. thanks so much, it does mean a lot to me. each
of these is somehow a child of mine, and makes its own way in the wide world
making contact with its own circle of people and connecting the circle back to
me. i have ever considered the instruments, no matter how perfect, are not as
important as the music played upon them, and the music is of less importance
than the people who play it. amen. glenn

When I asked Glenn if he had ever made an Ab WW, he responded that he figured somebody was going to ask about that one of these days... After doing some calculations, he sent my much-beloved Ab, followed by a Db and a Bb/A set. Always an inspiration to communicate with. Godspeed, friend!

I just got back from Glenn's funeral which was just about the most moving funeral I've ever attended. Full house at the local church, which made for a really nice sendoff. I printed out this entire thread and brought it along for Glenn's wife and family as a memento, and they really appreciated the thoughts of whistlers worldwide.
The family's plans for keeping Thin Weasel alive and well are very promising, and I'm sure we all wish them well-- I've offered whatever advice and support I can give.
There ARE still Thin Weasel flutes and whistles available, including Water Weasels, but it will take a while for a good inventory to be completed-- in his whistle storage as in so many other areas, Glenn was unconventional I came home with a wonderful wooden Bb, which is simply one of the very best whistles of any kind/material/pitch that I've ever played.

A mourned passing
I came late into acquaintance with Glenn, through his generosity for my friend, and his words of encouragement for her. I spoke with his daughter at some length, and through her eyes, know what a genuine loss we have suffered with his passing. Glenn and I had exchanged emails looking to a visit to him in Michigan at some point this summer, and that will not happen now, but I honor his memory as a true friend, and one whose contributions to so many through his craft made him a legend.

A few years ago, one of my customers brought in their whistle collection and I immediatly fell in love with her Thin Weasle. A beautiful whistle with a very sweet sound. Anyone with one of these is truley fortunate and destined to make beautiful music for many years to come.
Our thoughts to his family and loved ones,

To Glenn's Family and Loved Ones: I am sorry for your loss.
An old Chinese proverb: A good person's life is like a beautiful poetry.
Glenn not only made wonderful whistles, his life is a beautiful poetry and touched many people's heart.
