The BBC wrote:Detox diets do no more than the body's own natural system to get rid of toxins, US researchers claim.
Claire Williamson, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, added: "No single food can provide all the nutrients that the body needs, and therefore it is important to consume a balanced and varied diet in order to obtain adequate amounts of energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and fibre required for good health.
"Cutting out complete food groups in the long term, may have adverse effects on an individual's health."
So if you've been on a detox diet of late, well, p'raps it's time to get re-toxed?

It seems that so often these "detox" efforts are related to getting back to a "natural" state, and nothing seems more unnatural to me than what some people do to achieve this state.
I keep wondering what makes people feel the need to do this. The article said it's been going on for thousands of years. Is it a feeling of guilt and wanting to be "clean"? Is it a punishment of the flesh? A feeling that things are not going well and they would go better if you were "clean"? A wanting to start over again? A self-treatment for depression?
And here I thought DH was dunder head - I guess I better apologize to the little woman...

The Internet is wonderful. Surely there have always been thousands of people deeply concerned about my sex life and the quality of my septic tank but before the Internet I never heard from any of them.
For me it depends on my mood. It can mean "Dear Husband" or it can mean "Darn Husband", "Dorky Husband", "Dingbat Husband", "Delusional Husband" or whatever I decide the "D" part to mean at that particular moment. And yes, he knows that I call him these things, and he's cool with it
Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent

I have known some people who have made themsleves really sick on detox diets, and one guy who did so many things (diet, exercise, lifestyle, etc.) all at once that he had a stroke. While he was on it, however, he was literally sweating a black tarry substance as his body was cleaning itself out. I have read several articles about what scientists are calling our "body burden", i.e. the chemical load we have accumulated from living in the modern world. When people hear these types of stories, I wonder if some of them have their natural aversion to being dirty kicked into "hysteria" mode, and if perhaps this is what drives them to detox diets, etc.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.
Well, I must say that the idea that I could sweat a "black, tarry substance" is rather alarming. I guess my response is to pretend I never heard about that and let the black tar stay wherever it is. I suppose if people actually feel dirty inside that would be quite a powerful motivation. That must be a really awful feeling.

I've looked like that. But I was just really dirty and sweaty.

Isn't there a diet like that which some cancer patients eat? I forgot exactly what it's called, but it involves eliminating all foods except for one out of a person's diet.
