I'm going to IMSA!!!
Yesterday evening I got the letter that said that I had been accepted into IMSA, a high school that specializes in math and science. It's a boarding school, but I will be able to come home on weekends. Admission is very competitive and students from all over the state apply. I am soooooo happy about it because I have been so bored with school, and this should actually be challenging. The school is much bigger than mine now, so they have way more opportunities and tons of state funding (and a better music department). One of my best friends is also going. For anyone interested, their website is: http://imsa.edu/

Cool. We have a math & science magnet school down the road a bit, and two of the best summer students I've had have been from there. Better than any college student I've had.

Thanks everyone! I'm really excited about it. Although I'm not so much into math, I will be able to take more advanced classes that I can't take now (a.k.a. calculus). I'm more excited about getting better English, science, social studies, music, and foreign language departments. Our school is really tiny; we have fewer than 300 students, but this area is going to be developed really, really quickly and my school now won't be able to handle it. I'll be able to take physics, advanced chem., advanced bio, music theory, other languages besides Spanish, and many other college prep classes when I go to IMSA. Missy, keep checking, I think just about every state has something kind of similar. Thanks again everyone!

nah - Danner - Ohio doesn't have any legal provisions for the teaching of gifted kids, it's only mandated that they be identified. Some schools say that offering "honors" of AP courses fulfill this - but it doesn't.
Noah has been attending a private school for gifted kids, and will be attending a public magnet school next year (that is not my choice, but his father's - but I won't go into that).
What with NCLB and other federal mandates, I don't look for the situation to change in time to help him (he'll be in 9th grade next year).
But I'm VERY happy for you, and I'm sure you'll do well!

I never really enjoyed math until I took calculus. But when I did it suddenly started helping me think differently about the way physical systems worked. I guess I always had an intuitive grasp of arithmetic, and algebra simply annoys me. But calculus was not only useful but mind-expanding in its own way.Danner wrote:Although I'm not so much into math, I will be able to take more advanced classes that I can't take now (a.k.a. calculus).
Have fun!
