Picture of John Gallagher Flutes

Post by Blayne Chastain »

I've been asked a few times for pictures of my Gallagher Pratten Reproduction (Boosey). Well... I can do better than that. For a while there I was trying out his Rudall & Rose Reproduction so I was able to photograph both together for comparison.

Yes great flutes... I love that Rudall with very small holes.

But just a stupid question, which Gallagher is that ? The Firescribble directory gives two ones...

Matt, that is the Gallagher who makes primarily flutes who as opposed to Seth Gallagher who makes uilleann pipes as well.

What all do you, Blayne, do for those pictures like this and the one you had of that Copley? They look like they are film and not digital. What kind of backdrop? What film speed? What kind of lighting?

Cheers,
Aaron

Such a good picture that John Gallagher sends them out to customers, Blayne! He sent me this photo a couple months back when I called him to see how much longer it'd be until my flute was done (I'm getting a six-key Pratten).

Nice work, both by flutemaker and photographer.

He may not say, but I'm thinking he's got the flutes on a sheet of butcher's paper on
a table in a mostly unfurnished room. There's a large square flourescent light in the
ceiling with excellent diffusion. The light is almost directly over the camera, which is
about five feet away from the flutes. The camera is mounted on a tripod, manually
adjusted to low sensitivity and long exposure time.

At least, that's where I'd start if I wanted to recreate this shot.

That would certainly yield good results! We are setup with pro gear because we take alot of photos but there's no reason why you couldn't achieve similar results with a homemade setup.

Thanks for the input Chris.

Does Mr Gallagher think of salt spoon C keys on the foot joint as a feature of Rudall & Rose flutes ?

Best,
Hmm, you must not be kidding about that sworn to secrecy if you resisted the temptation
to correct my proposed setup! Darn it all... ;)

I've spent a week or so with that Rudall. It's an excellent flute. You can pop holes in your sheet rock with the bottem D. Best to play near an open window.
