We built this city... was a Starship song I do believe.

Slan,

Was it? Goes to show how memorable I found both of 'em.

I think not, although wasn't Home sweet Alabama written after "Mr Young" released Southern Man.
Err, sorry, I should have said 'Answer To Southern Man'. ;)

I'd better answer my own question. In most cases I like loads so I'm really just thinking of the first one or two taht come to mind right now.

Billie Holiday ... Strange Fruit, God Bless the child, I Cover the Waterfront
Duke Ellington .... Black and Tan Fantasy, Concerto For Cootie
Muddy Waters ... Louisiana Blues, I Can't Be Satisfied
The Carter Family ... Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Wildwood Flower
B.B.King ... Sweet Little Angel, Rock Me Baby
Benny Goodman ... One O'Clock Jump
Louis Armstrong ... Gully Low Blues, West End Blues, Wild Man Blues
Hank Williams (sr.) ... I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Move it On Over, My Son Calls Another Man Daddy
Frank Sinatra ... Fly Me To the Moon, My Way (on a bad day)
Robert Johnson ... Travelling Riverside Blues, Come On in My Kitchen
Bing Crosby ... White Christmas
Bessie Smith ... Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do, Give Me a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer.

Thank goodness; I felt so inadequate when I realized I couldn't offer songs to go with most of the previous band-lists. Mind you, I recognize the band names, and I'm sure I've heard their songs, but I can't put the two together in many cases. (I know Boston was a big group, for instance, but I couldn't name a single song until I saw others' responses, and then thought, "Oh yeah!" . . .)

I'm better with Wombat's list. These are the first tunes that came to mind, not necessarily my favorites:

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Duke Ellington - Black and Tan Fantasy (sorry, my Irish friends; different context!)
Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy
The Carter Family - Will the Circle Be Unbroken
B.B.King - Thrill is Gone
Benny Goodman - Sing, Sing, Sing
Louis Armstrong - Big Butter and Egg Man
Hank Williams (sr.) - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (I sorta like Jimmy Dale Gilmore's version, too)
Frank Sinatra - Angel Eyes
Robert Johnson - Hellhound On My Trail
Bing Crosby - White Christmas
Bessie Smith - Ain't Nobody's Business . . .

I was gonna do Wombat's list but I think I'll do better at this one. Maybe.

Boston: ?
Supertramp: The Logical Song
Led Zeppelin: Kashmir
Black Sabbath: ?
Queen: We Will Rock You
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Free Bird (of course)
Molly Hatchet: never heard of
Jethro Tull: Aqualung

Police: Every Breath You Take
Talking Heads: Psycho Killer
Pretenders: Back in the Chain Gang
Stray Cats: Stray Cat Strut
Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter
Jefferson Airplane: White Rabbit
Blue Oyster Cult: ?

There...not too bad, but maybe I should have done the one with XTC and Squeeze...
