17 out of 20.
I also looked at their post-smile expression. People who genuinely smile don't generally go to a "non-smile" instantly. What ever emotional gizmo caused the smile usually has to wear off.

Unless you step on their toe while they are smiling.

13/20. You can tell this is a British site, the people are so ugly. Several smiles I had to watch from behind the sofa.

When I was over there I thought the women were, on an average, more attractive then here in Michigan. Hmm.

I don't think you were looking at their faces, Fly.

13/20. That just about matched my prior confidence in my ability to tell. I think I would do better in real life since I'd have more contextual clues.

When I was doing the test I often wasn't at all confident that I was doing OK although in those cases I was confident about I got nearly all right.

Forced to say what I was going by, I said the eyes but really I think I was less influenced by a single feature than by various gestalt properties of the face as a whole.

Interesting test.

Gosh, I only got 10 of 20. So half the people that smile at me don't really mean it. Oh dear. I wonder which half?

18 out of 20. I'm not surprised. I usually know when someone is trying to manipulate me.

But didn't you misjudge any genuine smiles as fake?

I got 17/20, which is much better than I expected. I misjudged one as genuine and two as fake, but I think I mismarked one of those. (With my memory, it's hard to be sure.)

Here is the original article.

According to this research, men are better at recognising fake smiles than women.
