...how to they get space to hold still when they're wrapping a gumball around it?

There are more mysteries out there.

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Space is always standing still. It's the rest of the stuff that's moving.

The space never holds still. Haven't you heard of quantum foam? The trick with gumballs is to have several people observing the space at the time of wrapment so that all the elementary particles quit their wave-forming and lock into the position of their choice. At that moment, if you're quick, you can corral them into a gumball. This takes special training.

Are y'all talking about gumballs like the I-put-a-quarter-in-the-machine-and-it-came-down-the-little-track gumballs, or some space gumballs that I have never heard of?

Clearly, Band Nerd, you are not accustomed to conversations deeply rooted in the scientific, but equally mystical, esoterica of quantum dubblebubble.
