For those of you who think Jon does nice woodwork, please note my custom made flute swab/rod made from genuine Dowel rod wood with hand drilled hole in wood and sanded edges!

cocobolo flute

Post by Nelson »

Yes, Henke, I sent the cocobolo billits to M&E. I'll be getting an 8 kek R&R from Johnny Gallagher next week made from the same tree. I have a couple questions for Jon C.; the first one is, when you turn cocobolo it is down right waxie. Do you think it does not soak up water as easily as black wood or bodwood? The second question is, Johnny Gallagher put my flute over top of a bowl of ammonia and it turned chocolatey, like aging. Have you ever seen this or done this?

It took a hour to get to know how to post pictures on the forum (thanks Gary!) so I'll post comments on this beauty later on!

Appreciate!

Yes I removed the keys close up ... since you never look at a flute from this close ... it shows sratchs that you would'nt even notice from a normal view and I don't want anybody to think that this flute is not a pure beauty!

What on earth has happened to the keys ?
Has someone been beating the flute against a pebbledashed wall or a rock ?

Hi Andrew!

Actually, these 3 close up pictures has been taken at 5 centimeters from the flute so every tiny details, that you don't even see with your very eyes, seems to appear.

Actually, the flute looks really great!

Yes, as I read before, the keys look a little bit fragile ... a bit like the Lehart ones. But I'm a guy who takes care of things and I'm pretty sure I won't have problem with them for a while!

The flute sounds as good as it always did. The tuning has changed a bit, nothing disturbing. The tuning of the keys notes is really good!

I'm really delighted!

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

The flutemaster, when he saw one of my Rudall keys scratched was very annoyed, accusing me of scraping it.
Perhaps I am here looking at photographic faults, or the keys themselves were sent out scratched or otherwise very imperfectly formed ?
One of course gets a maximum of what one pays for.
I don't see a lot of imperfections having an undeveloped eye, and am looked down on as a raw beginner.
A professional keymaker would surely not send anything out in a damaged condition, and would have an eye refined by working on thousands of keys.
WE NEED TO KNOW !! On the present flute lichen we are not invited to hear the flute, and if the keys look scratched or otherwise damaged are we merely to say that the photos must be too good ?

And to avoid any suggestion of misunderstanding, some of the pillarwork looks like it has been done in the dark. Perhaps it really does look better "live", but without being too picky or offensive, one has to wonder.

Andrew, who's the flutemaster, if I may ask please? I've seen you refer to him before but I must have come to the forum too late to have the background.
