Wish/hope.

Checking the beginner answers, I see where I dropped a point.

In my lexicon, "wish" suggests that the wisher has some close relationship to the person spoken to, such as a parent speaking to a child. It suggests that the speaker is attempting to use emotional influence, and I would consider it would be rude for me to do so to someone I was not related to.

Not knowing from the information provided if this degree of relationship existed, I deliberately chose the less emotionally charged powerful "hope".

In the intermediate section question 14. Difficult/Hard, I dropped a point by choosing hard.

To me, difficult suggests a mechanical problem, e.g. it is difficult to climb a ladder with your hands tied behind your back. Hard suggests an emotional affect, it is hard to be told your feet smell. In this case, my assumption was that she would be emotionally affected, not that she was physically unable to receive the information.

I couldn't figure out what that score meant because I was sure my answers were corrrect, So, I followed the link at the end of the test that provides the answers. It's the page with a picture of the author saying "would these eyes lie to you?" And just above that, it explained that sometimes the results read "0" when all the answers were actually correct. It says that can't be helped. I think we can safely assume that the machine miscalculates the other way around too. So, all you people with "100," well that can mean "0" as well.

As an ex-high school teacher, believe me, I have written many tests. I stopped writing true and false questions because it was clear that for the more intelligent students it was harder to choose the "correct" answer to a question, mainly because intelligent people tend to see nuances that may not have been apparent to the writer of the test question. Multiple choice questions suffer from a similar disability. So don't despair if you happened to do poorly on this test. It may mean that you are especially gifted.

That reminds me, Doug Tipple, of a test that was administered to first graders in our school district when my sibs and I were that age. My sister complained about being marked wrong on one question which instructed her to circle the dog with the shortest fur. After scrutinizing the black & white line drawings, she concluded that dog #1 apparently had no hair at all since there were no hatch marks on the drawing to suggest hairs, so the correct answer must be dog #2 which had visible but modest fur.

Doug_T: boy, do I know what you are talking about!

Nate did horrible on his PSAT (actually, he always has done horrible on standardized testing). He knows the knowledge, he just didn't know how to "test". He would think too much about each answer, and get bogged down with "well, this could be correct if so and so happened", etc.
I found him a group that doesn't go over material, but goes over HOW to take a standardized test. After 10 sessions, he jumped his SAT score up 200 points.

Noah is the exact same way, and I know we'll be going through it all again with him. Plus, besides being "gifted" he's also ADD, so he doesn't concentrate on the "correct" things anyway.

Excellent example of why these tests don't always work!

It told me that people 55 to 59 scored highest in each category. Well, maybe the data HAVE changed. It was fun.
