Theme Music

Post by moxy »

OK, here's one for ya: If you had to choose a tune that would be theme music for a radio show (you can pick a different tune for the opening and for the closing of the show), what would it be?

1. Can be solo on the whistle
2. Or can be whistle accompanied by bodhran

Where would you record it? In your home where there is no background noise, or in the street, or in a classroom with others listening in?

It takes a lot of moxy to ask a question like that.

What kind of radio show? Any kind?
I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

Yeah, but nevermind them things. Pretend I'm playing something like... um... well, not the recoldr.asd,malknglkk... I can't even spell it, my keyboard won't let me...

What tunes would really catch your ear and make you want to listen to the show?

Since this is the "poststuctural" pub, I'd go with U2's "With or Without You" on low D whistle for the intro. Maybe their new single on vocals and Bodhran only for the outtro.

A lively jig. Or a lively slipjig.

Two tunes I'm trying to learn at the moment would suit, McGlinchey's Hornpipe, and Tommy Peoples' Jig #1. They's have to be played on a fiddle though, as both go below the D.

Both feature arpeggiated runs up and down, C# and Cnat, and use of the fiddle's G string, and they're catchy as hell.

I've also just discovered "A Day at the Races", a simple enough jig to play but very catchy.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

What tosh, Martin. When you go below D you just stop blowing and sing the note you want. :D However, I don't recommend using that method for notes that go off the top end of the whistle. :boggle:

I'm sorry to say my theme would be Scottish, not Irish, and I'll have to think on that.

That's a bit risque, don't you think? Hubba hubba.

The Mistcovered Mountains or the Lilting Banshee or one of those a-modally jig jobs there. If it's a bit "Celtic" I'd consider Northside Kitchen for the modulation.

I'd use Barry Fitzgerald's diddling from The Quiet Man, just to get on everyone's nerves. :D

Well, funny enough, ha ha, they're asking me to submit a sample of my own playing...

I'm not sure if that's such a great idea, I mean they have no idea what I sound like!!

I was actually thinking of Green Mountain cause I'm quite comfortable playing that tune.

And I thought I might lilt Tobin's Favourite as a separate sample of something different (they want theme music, but also other stuff).

But that's as far as I've gotten so far.

Thanks for all your suggestions, keep 'em coming, I'll be happy when I actually know one of the tunes you're suggesting... :boggle:
