So what are you giving up for lent?
Are ya gonna give up something you really like or chicken out and pick something you don't actually care about? (Guess which option I choose.)
May the joy of music be ever thine.

- Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Oddly enough, none of the people I know who always go on about "giving summats up fer Lent" are religious, and the 'giving up' normally lasts about as long as New Year resolutions.
This year I'm giving up pancakes. (After tonight I won't be able to face them for weeks anyway.)

I'm thinking of giving up broccoli, but my wife is not being supportive.

I'm giving up posting to off-topic threads. Yeah, right.
Okay, then really I'm giving up lusting after Bloomfield. ... Yeah, right.
Okay, then really I'm giving up ...well, everything is just so important to me... I guess I'll just stick with all of it!

I used to give up the internet entirely during Lent for various reasons (and it was a good discipline too...hard to do!). I haven't done that for the past couple of years, however, because I'm a moderator on another board and I don't like to leave them in the lurch.
This year I'll be doing a dawn to dusk fast, with only liquids during the day and one small meal in the evening. Food is a major compulsive issue with me, so that will be a good discipline too. Also, as a family, we will be praying the office of Compline nightly before bed.
Lenten observance is an offering, so there's really no reason for someone who isn't religious to do it. There's really no compulsion to do it at all...as my old rector used to say: "All may, some should, none must." I find it beneficial, personally, but that's me.
