Re: flutes
It would arguably be more interesting if readers could be told why certain players are using particular maker's flutes.
Who is sponsored. Who would use something else perhaps if the maker would make him one.
Who only wants freebies perhaps.
Who would like to have his mutillated flute restored, and so on. But we can't say !
And of course so much be just chance.
Shame !

Very good post Andrew, after speaking to many flute players these are some of the reasons why certain players play certain brands.andrewK wrote:It would arguably be more interesting if readers could be told why certain players are using particular maker's flutes.

That the best players play a flute is a pretty
good indication that it is good, for them, anyhow.
But that a flute isn't played by the best
is not a strong reason to conclude that
it is less good.
I once presented one of my flutes to one of
the best players and asked him to play it
and tell me honestly what he thought. Gee what a sound
he got. 'That's a good flute!' he said.
He had never heard of the maker; didn't
know the flutes existed.

There was some discussion on the board a year or two ago about the frequent lack of correlation between the quality of makers' flutes and well-known musicians playing them. Also the frequent correlation between makers' efforts at self-promotion and well-known musicians playing their flutes. Fortunately, I think word gets out pretty well about some of the better makers who don't kowtow to recording artists.

This is how I get paper's published.andrewK wrote:Like when Conan Doyle sent twelve leading figures telegrams saying " your secret is out" and all twelve left the country on that night's cross channel ferry never to be seen again
I write the journal editor: 'Have video tapes
of you and poodle. Publish my article or else!"
A week later, if they haven't accepted,
I send a follow up: "Does the name 'Fifi'
mean anything to you?"
Works everytime.
You can get a job in academia simply
by sending a form letter to chair people:
"Dear Sir or Madam,
I know all about her, him, it! Hire me
or else."
Don't ask me how I know. Amazing
the paranoia that's out there!
