One of my all-time favorites. Most multi-talented I'd say.

Now that is funny.

I think this entry is a renegade from a thread I haven't quite got around to starting: the top ten most tragic hairstyles.

(He won't win there either.)

One of my favorites too, along with Mick Fleetwood.

As for most influential, name me a drummer (Amateur or Pro) who hasn't learned the solo written by Ron Bushy. (Hint: he wrote the drum solo in In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida). A whole generation of kids grew up playing that solo on desktops, trash cans, construction helmets, what ever was available.
In July of 1968, Iron Butterfly released the monumental LP, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, featuring the 17:05 minute side-long track that shook the entire music industry with its phenomenal reception. 'Vida outsold every record in the history of recorded music within the first year of its release (over eight million copies sold) and therefore outgrew and outsold the standard of the music industry's "Gold Album" award. For this achievment, Iron Butterfly was subsequently awarded: The Industry's Very First "Platinum Album"! This historic award was created and presented by then-president of ATCO Records Ahmet Ertegun, who went on to become the current CEO of the WEA Group. Most recently, "Vida" received the Multi-Platinum award.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, stayed on the charts for 140 weeks, with 81 weeks in the Top Ten. To date the album has sold in excess of 30 million copies and remains an undisputed classic in the archives of rock with DJ's and audiophiles worldwide

I dislike Rush because of the voice of frontman Geddy Lee
(to the point where I may never visit Canada for having spawned him).
But, all the drummers I ever knew held Rush's drummer Neil Peart to the level most reserve for Dieties.
Apparantly, Mr. Peart really knows how to use silence as effectively as he uses noise.

I've heard similar assessment of the drummer for the Spin Doctors: he counts the rests rather than the notes.

We have a winner.

I hereby issue this Undisputed Certificate of Undisputed Praise to Wombat. Long may he be praised for his rock & roll acuity.

The correct answer is Keith Moon.

By the way, the best drumming on any rock & roll song in history:

Keith Moon on The Who's "Bargain", on WHO's NEXT.

actually Phil Collins used to be an excellent drummer, once upon a time. Anybody here remember Brand X?

For my money, the greatest, most creative, most intelligent drummer in rock is Bill Bruford. Depends on what you consider rock though, i suppose.

I agree, both about Phil Collins & and I certainly would praise the great Bill Bruford. Collins will always be associated with is pop work, but he's a very fine drummer and Brand X is a good example. And Bruford is the most intelligent and TASTEFUL drummer in rock music, IMHO.

I like Bill Bruford too.

My remark about Phil Collins was tongue in cheek, of course. Rock is full of downright bad drummers but he is certainly a good drummer. But he hardly has that special something it takes to be a contender for this award.

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

Bruford, while fantastic, really never was a rock drummer, and I think he'd agree with me on that.

From a technical standpoint, Terry Bozzio, Simon Phillips, and Steve Smith, with Neil Peart being not so far behind. Bonus points go to those who can list Bozzio's resume, Smith's hard rock and Jazz credits, and I bet no one here even knows who Simon Phillips is......

And yeah, I used to be a Drummer.

Didn't Simon Phillips work with Pete Townsend? I was thinking he played on "Let My Love Open the Door."

one of my favourites would be Jim Keltner

For those you may not know him here is a discography with a picture of him playing an invisible low whistle  http://www.geocities.com/peryharry/jimkeltner.html
