the joy of coffee

Post by aderyn_du »

Why is that first sip of coffee in the morning just the most delicious thing...that makes that very moment seem just perfect and that nothing could possibly go wrong with the day?

I'm a coffee addict myself and can't start/end a day without having a cuppa. I don't know why, but perhaps the caffeine thing. My pastor was talking about how he had to give up drinking coffee all day since he's weak on caffeine, but still MUST have a cup in the morning.
:)
And, your post inspired me to write a poem and here goes;

"Coffee"

in the

morning

I took

a

sip of

coffee

which was

just

so nice

so

warm

and so

cheerful

making me

feel

I can

survive

another day

:)

Guten Morgen to you!

When savouring that first cup of coffee of the day,why not listen to the ultimate coffee song at the same time.

Mississippi John Hurts "Coffee Blues"..really sets you up for the day.

And many a poor man that has roved,
Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.

The sensual pleasure of coffee has prevented me from transitioning to tea dependency, which may be more healthful...I take comfort in reports of new studies which suggest coffee has benefits of its own.

my first cup of coffee is truly a joyous thing. I love coffee ALMOST as much as I love my whistles. I share your enthusiasm for it, ad! And that was a great poem, tak! I've never heard the song that Dub was talking about....perhaps I'll google it now.

The first niff of it brewing in the morning is so inviting...

I like it strong - in fact, a discussion about 'camp fire coffee' was one of the first attractions between my husband I ...

To quote George of Jungle, "Java, java, java, java, java, java, java ..."

Java Jive - The Ink Spots

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the jivin' and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

I love java, sweet and hot
Whoops! Mr. Moto, I'm a coffee pot
Shoot me the pot and I'll pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

Oh, slip me a slug from the wonderful mug
And I cut a rug till I'm snug in a jug
A slice of onion and a raw one, draw one.
Waiter, waiter, percolator!

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the jivin' and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

Boston bean, soy bean
Lima bean, string bean.
You know that I'm not keen for a bean
Unless it is a cheery coffee bean.

Drop me a nickel in my pot, Joe, Takin' it slow.
Waiter, waiter, percolator!

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the jivin' and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup!

I never got into coffee drinking. My first experience was when my dad gave me a cup to try. I was a child, probably six or seven and I threw up from it.
That was enough to avoid coffee for 20+ years. One office I worked at had coffee brewing all day and the room always seemed to smell like dirty feet. Again, another reason to stay away. I tried some Dunkin Donuts iced coffee last year. It had lots of sweetener, milk and flavoring... not too bad. I tried Starbucks iced coffee last week... it had a horrible burned taste. Yuck!

The only time I really didn't like coffee was when, four days in, I had a cup of fresh stuff and knew instantly, without doubt, that the last time I'd reacted to coffee like that I'd been pregnant... !!!.... We weren't *supposed* to be having a third child!!!... LOL... it took me most of the nine months to get used to the idea, and we wouldn't trade her for the world, but DH had to actually act on his promise to visit the tube tier, or ELSE!!
*That* cup of coffee was alarming to say the least.

Now even she (12) loves it, though doesn't get it as much as she'd like.

Starbucks always over-roasts their beans, or something (ha! I almost typed 'beings' instead of 'beans'!!). Sometimes I can get a good cup from them, but it seems like more often than not it does taste burned. Pretty sad, when you consider how much you pay for a cup of coffee there!

I love walking into my home and smelling coffee brewing-- Annie's right, that first morning sniff is a happy thing. :)

My wife and I are coffee lovers, too.

In fact we just recently switched from a drip maker to a French press.

A French press makes wonderful coffee!!!! Not bitter at all, you can make it as strong as you like, and it is just smooth and rich.

:)

I have to agree, even though my granddaughter works for them now.

The real answer, if you find yourself with so much time on your hands that you're playing the whistle and just generally relaxing too much, is to roast your own. A good roaster and grinder aren't cheap, but green coffee beans are cheaper than roasted--and almost infinitely tastier. There are also a vast number of different varieties to experiment with.

I'm relying on supermarket coffee while I'm here at my son's house. At least I can look at the beans and pick some that aren't over-roasted--though heaven only knows how old they are. I do buy the beans and grind for each cup, though.

One of the many wonderful things about finally getting into my own house will be the ability to use my own espresso setup. I guess I'm gonna hafta take some new photos, though.

I like Starbucks coffee. Yukon and Fair Trade are my favorites and are milder than most of Starbuck's other coffees.

I also like my Chemex coffee pot. It turns out a fine cup of coffee.

James, I have thought of trying a French Press. Which one do you use?

Coffee ismy primary food group and I have to agree that first sip in the morning is the darling of the day!

It doesn't matter what the brand or from where! Tell me it's coffee and if it quacks like a cup, I will drink it. Seven years in the army cured me for striving for finer coffees in my life.

We use a Bodlum (sp?) press. It is advertised as an 8 cup press...that actually works out to a little over two full mugs of coffee, perfect for my wife and I.

It was about half the price of our drip maker, and makes far better coffee.

You pre-warm the maker with hot water and heat some water almost, but not quite, to boiling; you want to stop when the kettle just starts to steam.

Put your choice amount of coffee in the pot--I use about 5 rounded tablespoons of Arabica coffee--and add hot water to about an inch from the top and stir well. Run hot water over the press and just barely insert the press in the top of the pot. Wait 4 minutes, and then push the press gently down through the coffee.

That's it; wonderful coffee! And the whole thing is such a simple contraption that it's fast and painless to clean.
