We have tsunami training for all of our students. Back in '64, a wave washed over this town, as well as a village out in the Sound. Both the town and the village have since relocated. At our house on the tide, we run up the hill when there's a quake. Though if it's a big one, we won't have time to run.

So many souls. I wish them peace.

And fortitude for those staying and rebuilding.

I don't know how tsunami warning systems work elsewhere, but my in-laws live near a tsunami-vulnerable area in Oregon, and they have something similar to air-raid sirens. When conditions raise the danger level (such as an offshore earthquake) or when a tsunami surge is known to be headed in that direction, the sirens are supposed go off. I believe there are also radio and TV warnings similar to (and possibly affiliated with) the Emergency Broadcast System as well. While it's not always the case, there is often time to get to a safe area before a tsunami hits land, if one has sufficient warning.

Latest count is over 13,000 lost......I just heard that some of the tourist were sun bathing when the wave hit. So evidently there wasn't any suffucient warning that the wave was on its way.

Terrible, terrible news and dreadful stories about family members being lost and about parents losing their children as they got swept away by the wave. My brother is in Thailand now for diving and I just heard from him this morning that he is ok. They had decided to leave Krabi for a few days of diving on the islands on the east coast. Turned out to be a life saving decision. My thoughts and prayers are with all who did lose someone, or have to struggle through a very difficult time.

21,000 as of this morning, a number that is difficult to imagine. Marcus, I'm glad your brother is ok.

What a terrible tragedy!

I have a friend who is down in Thailand with his whole family, I hope he is alright. I haven't heard anything from him yet. There were apperantly a lot of Swedes on vacation in some of the areas that were hit worst by the tidal waves and the Swedish athorities report hundreds of people that are still lost after the quakes.

Even though I'm not really a religious person, I pray for all the people in anyway affected by this terrible disaster.

I have to disagree strongly with both of you. Humans always tend to think that we are rulers of the earth and nature and everything in it. I think the idea is silly. We live here on nature's terms, we don't own the earth and I think we all need to understand that we are not the biggest force in action here (strictly from a non-religious point of view). It is ok to try and protect ourself from the forces of nature but to blaim it when things go wrong is plain silly.

My friend and his family is still missing down in Phuket, we all hope they are alright.

I agree... it is a horrible loss of life, and sorrow is inescapable over it, but blaming nature is not a sane response... it is ludicrous... we live on a planet that is also alive. To attribute intent or evil to it is to misunderstand the nature of nature. We are only a small part of it, and the very places that are subject to such activities tend to be the places that attract us for living and recreation... the earth doesn't *choose* to do these things... it is simply going through its inevitable cycles.

My heart is with all the souls that are lost in this and their loved ones left behind. A tragedy indeed.
