Well, I am waiting for my children to buy me a tinwhistle for Christmas...
But who can wait that long?? Yesterday, I tried to make a low-D tinwhistle, using Dennis Havlena's plans* and a hunk of 3/4" copper pipe, but the first try, after many hours, failed to generate a useful tone.
So, today....I thought, I am going to make this work, so I sawed the fipple and blade end off, and started all over again, while watching the Vikings and Packers games (egad what miserable games).
Eventually, a somewhat useful tone was obtained. Of course, by then, the pipe was too short to make a low-D whistle, but my digital tuner said it was only a half step below a low G whistle...so, by the end of the second football game, a low G whistle it became!!
OK, so it is too "airy" and the notes are not too exact, but here are my first 9 notes..of "Wayfaring Stranger," recorded with the little cheap built-in microphone on my iMac:

Not impressive, I know, but the exercise has left me excited to actually get a REAL whistle.

How could you be lost in North Dakota? There isn't a lick of snow on the ground. If you're in the Red River Valley where it's flat you can see nearly forever. If there are some trees in the way you must be around Bottineau. If there are some buttes and gullies in sight you must be out around Medora. If you can see a huge nearly dry lake you must be up around Garrison.
