Klezmer Channakuh Music?

A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Klezmer Channakuh Music?

Post by Patrick D'Arcy »

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone recommend some good Klezmer Channakuh music that sits well on the pipes?

Thanks :)

Patrick.

Lemme see:

Nope, can't think Kletzmer for pipes tonight. Sorry, Patrick, but how about Irish/Israeli songs:

Manny Boy
Have you ever been across the sea to Haifa?
Down by the Solly Gardens
Rocky Road to Damascus
Will Ye Golan Lassie Golan
The Mountains of Megiddo
The Rose of Galilee
Miriam's Wedding

Phew! Better out than in, I say!

I believe Pat Sky already provided a useful link for just such an occasion.

I seem to recall that Isaac Alderson cooked up a little ditty he calls the Is-Reel. I think you might need to ply him with drink to get it out of him though.

Klezmer is AWESOME music.

There's a fellow here in Denver who's visited my home on session nights, and he is incredibly gifted.... to my ear, Klezmer fits in very well with IrTrad.

Hi folks, Iv'e been lurking here a long time, but would like to post more often...

Brian, I was at your place when that amazing Klezmer fiddler was playing, and he is really a great musician. He played a tune that we recognized from a Lunasa recording - on the pipes. Brian Dobson was there too. Do either of you two Brian types remember that or the name of the tune?

Pat, you might pick up an album or 2 by the Klezmatics - they're amazing and may very well have something that's adaptable! That's a great idea most definitely worth looking into!

Dirk, was it the freilach from the first Lunasa album you're talking about? That's a beautiful tune indeed. John McSherry's beautiful playing works especially well in helping bring that tune to life (which can be said for everything he plays, IMHO) - incidentally, does anyone know what sort of boxwood chanter he plays on? I heard he's played the same chanter since he was really young and only recently got new Dave Williams drones & regs and maybe a new Preshaw chanter?

Horpiper, Yes that's the recording I was thinking about. I sure love that first Lusana CD. I love the new Lunasa ones too! I don't know who made McSherry's pipes, though. Does anyone else?

John plays a chanter made by Sean McAloon which was a copy of a Rowsome chanter that he owned.

Above is a great site, with lots of Klezma stuff.
Klezma is pretty big here in Manchester and there are regular sessions.
