After playing Rock and Roll in the early eighties, and very loud ITM from about 1985 on...I've got the tinitus thing happening as well. I am one of those cursed Basmatis with PP...but it was always more of a pain in the arse than it was helpful...save as a party trick. Nowadays, my hearing being what it is, I'm hard pressed to pick out any one pitch.
OK so we may not have perfect pitch but hows your judgement on what sounds in tune ?Heres a little exercise you could do if you have access to two sound making tuners(you could do it with one tuner and your tenor drone but it is easier with two tuners)set one tuner sounding D then set the other to the notes of your chanter making sure to recalabrate the tuner to sound the notes in just temperment It’s a good way also to hear the difference between the two temperments especially the F# .One tuner D one tuner F# equal temp you can actually hear those waves you hear when the drones are out !
Here,s alittle experiment you could also try and see which is better set one tuner to D then the other to C nat but four cent flat which is the way most pipemakers tune their C nat then try C nat seventeen cent sharp ,that’s in tune according to the maths Whats your opinion?
To tuneC nat four cent flat recalabrate the hertz to 438 and seventeen cent sharp to 443
This all remind me of a story I heard a few years back, the truth of which I cannot confirm.
Sissy Spacek auditions for the role of Loretta Lynn in the film A Coal Miners Daughter. Screen tests and singing auditions go well but the director also decide to talk to her husband the well known conductor Andre Previn (who has perfect pitch) about her musical abilities.
Previn tell the director he has no worries about Sissy's ability as she has perfect pitch. The director says "That's funny she didn't mention that at the audition".
To which Previn replies "She wouldn't have done because she doesn't know"
