Tell us something.: Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Part of what I love about celtic/folk style music is the sound of a handful of handmade instruments that remind me of simpler times.

I just checked out the site and had no problems with any of the movies nor the tutorials.

Thanks you so much Phil.

A Quick Note

Post by Phil Hardy »

Hi Guys, just a quick note to say that all the basic lessons are now on line.
They are all available as a free download so you can keep them on your computer.
These lessons are designed for the newbie low whistlers who want to start but don't know how or where. Each lesson builds to the next so by No4 you should have the basic skills to start playing simple tunes.

Always take your time with practicing and don't expect to be Mike McGoldrick in a month,if you let your love of the music be the fuel, you'll get there in no time.

I'll be posting many more tunes lessons in the very near future.

All the best

Phil.

I haven't checked out the new ones but I see there's now 4 tutorials on Phil's movies. I had really liked watching the demos that are on the site showing Phil playing all the different low whistles. They were a help in getting a feel for low whistle technique, just watching him play. Great little tunes too. -Thanks for the tutorials as well Phil. --mike

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

I was just going to send you an email regarding this. Whenever I try to download the standard way (save target as) It will only allow me to save the .htm file. How do I get to the actual file?

Anyone else?

Here's the location for the first movie:
http://www.kerrywhistles.net/movies/Tutorial_1.wmv
Just open that in a new window then use "save page as" (ctrl-s) and choose where to download.
If you want the other tutorials as well you just change the number in the link so for exampel the second movie is located at:
http://www.kerrywhistles.net/movies/Tutorial_2.wmv

Now the videos work! I couldn't understand all this time why the video links acted dead on my pc, yet everyone else was getting them to work on their machines. I clicked on the url that Mustafva posted and they played fine, yet when I returned to Phil's website they still refused to play. Then it hit me . . . I disabled my internet security software and . . . BOOM . . . the videos worked properly. So if you have spyware you may want to disable it if the videos aren't loading.

Phil -- Great job. I have no one I can watch to pick up the correct ways to play the whistle. This was the perfect example of why I need to sit with someone . . . so that I don't continue teaching myself how to do things the wrong way. After watching you, I see that I was learning to do rolls and crans all wrong (which I suspected but had no way to verify). Thanks so much for straightening me out and making it seem much simpler.

Right click on them (on a windows pc) and choose "save target as".
I believe to do the same thing on a Mac, you click and hold and then choose "save target as" when the context menu appears. But it's been a lot of years since I've owned a Mac. ;)

Using the first of the four individual links, I just downloaded the first video which is just the kind of how-to instruction that I appreciate. Thank very much to Phil for taking his time to make the videos and to those those who provided the individual links.

Phil, I thought you might be a Northerner, but I didn't know you were that far north! :D

By the way, the tutorials are very good (as I follow along on a Kerry low D, no doubt!)
