I'm sorry, but I've found a problem with England

Post by avanutria »

It seems nearly impossible to make a waffle here! :P

I can't find a waffle-maker anywhere at a reasonable price. I'm scouring the internet now. In a week of checking shops all over the place I managed to find ONE waffle-maker, for the low low price of £49.99!

Martin said something about waffles not being very English. But I think he was eating something called "Cheesy Footballs" at the time, so I'm not so sure about the culinary expertise there..

Needless to say, there are no waffle-mixes in the food shops either. So I am calling on volunteers to post their favourite waffle recipes! Help me out here, please! :D

(Edit - PS, I hope everyone knows I'm kidding about the "problem" - I love it here!)

We seem to combine the Sandwich toasters and waffle makers in the UK.

No matter, they all end up gathering dust at the back of the cupboard after the first three weeks anyway...

Heehee:

"20 most popular sandwich/waffle makers out of 21 total"

"Find Maker Type
Sandwich Toaster (21)"

I guess that means 21 of the 21 results are sandwich makers!

Amazon.co.uk was similar. It combined waffle makers and doughnut makers. Four results. Two were wafflemakers - but discontinued. It suggested I buy them used. :really:

Or you could just buy the frozen Birdseye potato waffles, they're waffley versatile! :) Cook 'em, grill 'em, bake 'em, fry 'em, waffley versatile!

You can even get waffle chips too! Loverly with Daddies Sauce...

You just get a decent pancake mix, add an extra egg, and make it a little more liquidy. Then, make sure the waffle iron is hot, and don't open it too soon.
Of course, if the only available waffle iron is too pricey just punch holes in your pancake.

Books..on Amazon UK. Waffles..potato waffles and those spongy cakey things are in most supermarkets, but you haven't lived until you've tried freshly made warm Welsh waffles...

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Our family favorite is straight out of Good Housekeeping. Its for the little-holed waffles, not the Belgium type. To be honest, we have a hard time finding the right waffle maker here too. There is only one that we know of that makes them good. You could always get a U.S. one and use a voltage converter.

Buttermilk Waffles

1 3/4 cup all purpose flour

1 tsp double acting baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2 cups buttermilk

1/3 cup salad oil

2 eggs

1. Pre mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt with a whisk

2. Add buttermilk, oil and eggs. Beat until thoroughy blended.

3. Pour onto waffle maker etc.

If they dont' sell real maple syrup in the U.K., have someone send you some.

To hell with plugs, cables and teflon. What you need is an Aussie jaffle iron and a camp fire.

When my Irish friend was in chef's school (in Sligo) she wrote my mom saying they were going to study waffles in school - so "what's a waffle?". She had never even heard of waffles before. So I would guess they aren't very popular.

Au contraire! Waffling has been the principal pastime of Civil Servants and Elected Officials here in this sceptred isle for centuries.

No waffles!!?? That would mean no Waffle House restaurants either!! As someone from Georgia, who lives within walking distance of, and frequently visits, the site of the first ever Waffle House restaurant, I find that intolerably uncivilized!

No waffle irons on ebay? I have two at the house and one at my mom's I picked up in yard sales for about a buck apiece. I use buttermilk and biquick and eggs for the batter. Some sourdough mixed in makes it interesting too.

Yes, oodles of them on ebay. Some people like the old cast irons ones better than modern plug ins, btw. I've used them, although I don't own one. (cast iron)
My opinion is stupid and wrong.
