Like all things, appropriate in moderation. Too much and I think I'm playing a cardboard mailing tube.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Tell us something.: I love Irish music! I am mostly a whistle player but would like to learn more about flutes. I also have a couple older whistles I'd like to sell and maybe pick up a bamboo flute to practice with.

I wonder if a person's chiff or pure preference relates to tones outside the whistle such as; human voice (ex. Dr. John - chiff, Freddy Mercury-pure) or other instruments. (ex. saxophone - chiff, Oboe - pure). I be a puritan meself!

I find that a generous amount of talc, applied to the inner thigh, prevents excessive chiffing. :D

That's up to the player. They can be played with extreme "chiffiness" (i.e. Noel Rice), moderate chiffiness (i.e. Matt Molloy) or none at all (i.e. James Galway).

i like a pure sounding low D, like the howard
but for high D's, i want more chiff to soften the second octave, like a burke composite.

then again, i you play along with other instuments, it's different.
if i play along with a chiffy accordion, i'd prefere a pure sounding high D,
and it depends on the room you're playing in.
