Due to the British presence over the years, Highland pipes are played there. They have been turning bagpipes for years. A natural extension is to try the uilleann pipe market with its ever growing demand, including among highland pipers.

The people in the region are reknowned for their ability for hand crafting just about anything from their homes, as long as they can get an original to copy from. Unfortunately they tend to put most of these skills into crafting handmade Kalashnikoffs, but these are well known for their quality and usability.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

The people in that region have been playing pipes (highland type) a lot longer than anyone in the USA.

Sean Folsom does a very interesting presentation on the history of the "bagged beast".

Except Pakistani gunsmiths are pretty good and the Pakashnikoffs actually shoot pretty straight.

I think it's more a question of not having any clue what the thing is supposed to work like when you get it finished. With a gun they have that all figured out. With pipes, well, it's just aping what something looks like, and with direction there are a few Pakistani pipes that manage to come out at least playable. Reproducing reeds seems beyond them however, and that's probably why they tried to go to these odd Highland practice chanter-style plastic reeds, and make an UP chanter that would work with them.

Well, regardless of how the pipes turn out, I have to admit it's nice to know that at least SOMEBODY's making money outta this whole uilleann pipes racket...
