I'm sure we have all heard it from our mothers "DONT EAT MUSHROOMS YOU FIND GROWING IN THE YARD!".Perhaps we should all start heeding Mom's advice.

I think this thread is very Shakespearean: Much Ado About Nothing !
A guy posted some tunes
Another guy didn't care for the playing

This has been a grand little soap opera.
I have not got the time nor indeed the inclination to drag out a load of quotes to pick apart, so briefly (I hope),
I have been playing whistle for over thirty years now and in my opinion our man in Miltown Malbay cannot be faulted. The clips are awful.
As Glauber said, the Kesh is not a hard tune to play but Serps rendition of it is diabolical. Has a clip posted by a beginner for appraisal it is fine but as a teaching aid-no way. Now, The Derry Air , well the high notes in the second part were beyond description.Any newbie hearing that would want to rush out and buy a banjo,a bodhran, anything but a whistle for fear of making such a dire screeching wail.
Anybody who interprets this has a slur on the man is a fool.I have never had any dealings with the man in my life and thus know nothing about him. I admire his intentions and respect what he is trying to do but his playing is nowhere near the standard a teacher needs to nurture young talent. It is not even in the same galaxy.
Funny thing though,I can hear a really great tone in the whistle he is using but it is struggling to get out . It seems to be a very bright, clear sound that ,in the hands of a good player, could be a formidable tool and I intend to buy one of these whistles and give it some serious hammer.
So Serp, if you are reading this, keep making these little instruments so loved by all us Chiffers and for Christs sake, keep on practicing.
Things can only get better.

Slan,
D.

You know, being critical can be a whole lot less than a good thing... unless you are hired to make the judgements... and even then, whe you are judging people's intent and ability, you need to know a whole lot more about tact than you think you know about the topic. :)

I find it rather ruefully entertaining that some here see themselves as acceptably expert enough to tell me who can and who cannot teach me something. Personally, I have found through the years that I can learn something from just about anybody.. especialy if I don't carry a chip on my shoulder (it makes it difficult to hold the whistle :D )

There are, though relatively few, LOL, even some people that *I* can teach whistle to... I've got some experience and talent that outweigh my inabilities in some cases, and others that have been playing far less time and can show me more than a thing or two.

I find it distasteful that certain people here hold an obvious grudge against Serpent, though I understand some of the why's, I disagree with the venomous reactions.

His offer is generous, whether *you* value it or not. Your assessment of his motives, ability and qualification needen't be made about something that is offered free of charge. If he were charging, you might have some ground to stand on... as it is, IMHO, you are coming off as petty at best.

Point of fact, re the 'learnability' of Serpent's playing.. I just learned "Londonderry Air" yesterday and this morning, and so it is the one I chose to listen to first... when I play it *at my current best* as a new tune, I *may* play it better than he, *but*, his emphasis, though probably not appreciated by some "experts", is different than mine, and gives me some considerations of ways to vary my version whn I wish... there... I learned something from him. I win! :P

:) ,
Fair point Annie,
Irish people call it "The Derry Air",
Just thought I'd mention that in passing.

I want you all to know that were George Carlin to run for president of the USA, I'd vote for him! Wanted to get my two cents into this thread and felt I had to say that...

Thank again, Dubhlinn... once again you have enriched my knowledge by taking the Anglo-centric filter off... :)

In every generation, there is a chosen one.

Now, I'm not sure if that relates to the thread slayer or the whistle.

It makes the birdies swoon
It sends them to the moon
