I try not to personalize the wild ones too much, but it's hard when they're so cute, so when I saw this yesterday, I felt a bit sad and had to resist running off the yellowjacket that was chomping on one of the little guys like it was big bug burrito:

Anyhow, I like spiders, too, but this morning we spotted this mantis eating what I first took to be a little green spider of some kind:

As is often pointed out, the predators are as likely to eat one another as they are to eat what we consider to be "destructive" insects, like aphids and plant bugs. Oh well, at least they're interesting.

And, as it turns out on closer inspection, it looks like it was eating some kind of little hopper, because spiders don't have segmented abdomens.

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

As we all know, mother deer hide their young fawns while they go browsing. The fawn instinctively stays motionless and quiet until Mom returns. In this case, Mom spotted (no pun intended) a perfect hiding place to stash little one. The background is just the right color of brown, and it's covered with speckles (apple blossom petals), just like Junior. After a couple of hours, Mom returned to retrieve him, and away they went. (This happened somewhere in Oregon.)

Daisey is indeed a cutie-pie and I bet she doesn't even know that she is a dog! Even hamming it up for the camera!

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Just when I thought this was the longest thread in the history of thread-dom, I look up and see that the Political/Religious thread is even longer.

Everybody on the Political/Religious thread is a cutie-pie.

Wow, haven't seen you on the boards in a long time, Nancy! I was thinking about you just the other day. :)
