**Switching topics after following Loren's link...**

So Loren, do you reccommend the Crumhorns, Cornamusen, Racketts, Shawms, or Sordunes? How many octaves can you get out of these? Are any of them similar to whistles? Do you get to work on these at all, or are you a recorder/flute guy?

I stick with the Flutes and recorders, those other instruments weird me out man - most of them, when played, sound like sombody is torturing a small woodland creature

Ok, seriously: As you no doubt noticed, our retail store (next door to the work shop) sells our instruments, as well as instruments from other makers. We don't produce the instruments you mentioned, recorders and flutes are our main thing. However, we do see the odd crumhorn, shawm, etc, in the workshop for repairs, so I might do a little work on one now and then, but it's rare, mostly I'm working production or doing repairs on recorders and flutes.

Having said that, the people in our retail shop are quite knowledgeable on all the instruments we offer, including the one's you mentioned, so feel free to give Nick, Eric, or Emily a call, they'll be happy to talk cornamusen with you (sounds like a foreign language

)

I used to own number 873 or so but I cracked it trying to force it onto my Oak, after it had fit my Gen so nicely. I sent it to Mack, who couldn't fix it. So he made me a new one and then I bought another so I could have one that fit each tube.

FYI, the Oak is a little louder and a little breathier. Both are super sweet.

Did I mention that Mack give great service?

I just bought an Oak (nickel) yesterday. (That's #9 for me. I was in the music store for a new guitar slide, and the Oak was there, so what could I do?) It was extremely raspy on the second-octave d and c, so I managed to get the head off to take a look for any problem areas--which I didn't find. However, after having trouble getting the head back on, I discovered that the head-end of the Oak tube was flanged out a bit.

I was able to get my old Feadog head--the one I replaced with a Whitecap--onto the Oak tube, but with no improvement in the sound. I tried re-tweaking it, but still no improvement. That's when I started working on getting the Oak head back on.

I had to cool the tube with ice, then soak the head in extremely hot water to get it all back together. In the process, I found that twisting the head a bit to the left and right changed how raspy it sounded on the d and c. I was able to adjust it so that the c sounds fine and the d is acceptable when played vented. (While I had the head off, I also noticed that the skin of my fingers protrude a good ways into the finger holes, so perhaps there's some crucial relationship in how the finger holes line up with blade.)

I can't get a Whitecap for it until at least July, so I'll see if I can learn to make it sound good. As it stands, it's a bit louder than the Whitecap Feadog, and can take more pushing, but isn't quite as sweet-sounding.
