If I've Said It Once, I've Said it 1000 Times ...
Enjoy Your Music!
This, my millennial post, gives me pause to reflect.
Much is dross or icing; but, the heart
of what I've grown to value here has three dimensions.
First, there is the music itself. It expresses those things that are beyond the words, beyond the lyrics of the day. It touches an essential part of us that can never be fully understood in words. Each tune played, helps us explore and express the diversity of life that seems beyond the scope of our thoughts; thoughts that are ever bound in words. The richness and depth fed by melody builds in each of us an awareness that life is more, more than I, more than now, more than here. This is an inward dimension, how it effects the self.
Second, there is the connection the music creates between us. It transcends the differences of politics, faith, nation, and age. As each of us are connected to the music in our own unique way, so are we bound to each other. Connected with one another for we all experience the connections to the music; each claiming membership in the family of man, sharing our humanity. This is an outward dimension, how it effects us.
Finally, there is the simple playing. The place where the inward and outward touch. The place where each I becomes more in itself. The place where we, as a group, become more than the simple sum of our members. It is not learned skill nor innate talent that brings us to this point, it is participation. It is the simple playing. Playing is the dimension of now, the moment that any and all can enter.
In Music and Life:
Play the heart of it.
Play joy, sorrow, longing, and mystery.
Play impish, snippish, mischievous, prankish.
Play hope, dread, confusion, and consternation.
Play rage, regret, worry, and wonder.
Play the sunrise, moonrise, and the first cup of coffee in the morning.
Play the babes first step, the bridal dance, and the last step to grave.
Play the seaside, the canyon, the rapids, and the falls.
Play the thunderstorm, the mist, the first sunny day of spring,
. the gentle breeze of the last leaf falling,
. the snowflake caressing the window pane.
Just play.
May inward meet outward in your moment as you ...
