Let me gloat a bit....

Post by brewerpaul »

My NA flutemaking friend who is also a world class woodworker convinced me to submit a couple of whistles to the Northeast Woodworker's Association show this weekend in Saratoga Springs. He entered them in the "odds and ends" category which included many hard to classify items: decorative sculptures, knicknacks, musical instruments, models, etc. I went up to see the show today and was floored to see that I had won Third Place!
Sweetest moment: when I got to the display, a gentleman was looking over the 5 whistles and commented that "They should have someone here playing tunes on them". I picked up the Bocote whistle and rattled off The Sweeps Hornpipe...

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

Congrats Paul for winning bronze against all odds!

How are you going to spend the prize money? A new house, tools to make a low D, a foundry to cast metal whistles, or a trust fund for the beginning luthiers?

Tell us something.: Long ago, I was told that I faked iTrad whistle work very well. I took that comment to heart. 20 years of private lessons - and many, many hours of rehearsal later - I certainly hope I have improved...

Congratulations Paul. :)

As a matter of curiosity, what were the items that kept you out of first place? I'd be very surprised if they were things I'd like more than your whistles, so those people are lucky I wasn't the judge.

Yes, I know, I don't know what they are. I don't have to know what they are. :D

Congrats Paul. Do not let this go to your head in that you stop making the new delrin line - I will want one of those babies soon. :)
