Homophobic whistlers!
Food for thought:
Regarding those on the list who refuse to play whistles which "have a recorder look to them" (like O'Dwyer's "Lon Dubh" and the Sweetheart whistles) -
it can only be boiled down to pure homophobia. At least for the male whistlers (and from what I've read, it seems to be largely male whistlers who have the problem with such whistles).
There's no other reason; the whistles in question (and others - isn't Swayne another?) are excellent instruments, play well, and sound great.
A post here I read recently showed quite clearly (with photos) that modern recorders are available without the "typical recorder head".
Needing to avoid those whistles with such heads, even with the experience of having heard and played them and acknowledging that they sound great and play wonderfully, leads only to the possiblity that the avoidance is a visual one.
What is it about this helmet-shaped wooden stick which one so vehemently wishes to avoid having one's lips around. Could it be . . . a phallic symbol?
Get over it, guys!

Orual, "Antigone", anyone?
Seriously, jim, father of mine has a recorder, too; wooden recorder in the key of G in fact. Never plays it, though, I've no idea how come he ever thought of buying that abominable stick.
And tommy, I think you're wrong in pointing out that the newer, straight-looking recorders do not incur such thoughts of sensuous anguish among recorder-hating whistlers. First, some people just basically hate the very thought of playing recorders because 1) s/he had to learn it while in a school 2) one's guardians played it 3) had a traumatic event related to the use of a recorder. For me it was chiefly 1, I hated the music classes at school -- even now I just can't stand the sound of the recoder (except for some tunes played by a few professional players, but those numbered are limited). Then you might realise that ANY long stuff, be it an inexpensive (sure, non-recorder like in shape) whistle or $2200 flute (yep, totally slim), can be considered a phallic symbol -- even a middle finger. Where would the progressive whistlers be then??

I have never had this comparison of the recorder’s shape before in my mind until now. I think the only way to understand this proposed idea is for people (especially women) to post pictures of them self’s playing the recorder

wombat, I came up with a solution to this problem.
Simply, sell all the whistles and flutes and whatever recorders we have, then start whistling in a 'natural' way (i.e. lips). This time no phallic symbol.....really? I guess it will not only make situations worse, it'll surely set the the Freudians on fire for another argument...

I have a Cosmic Drainpipe in low D, into which a streem of air goes in and out, but that doesn't mean I've low self-esteem. Are the people with uncountable soprano D's and Eb's and many other highkeys have high self-esteem? But the size of high whistles are small compared to low whistles, and although -- ok, I'll stop. maybe we shoudl ask one of them Crystal Peo
It's them!!

I've just ordered a LOW 'A' from Stacey O'Gorman (Alba) - my excuse is that it's VERY COLD here at the moment!!antstastegood wrote:So if I buy a Low D, everyone is going to think I am subconsciously overcompensating?
No wonder Dale dedicated the low whistle page to Sigmund Freud.

As I've a low Bb, does this mean I should change my name to "Ivor Bigun"antstastegood wrote:So if I buy a Low D, everyone is going to think I am subconsciously overcompensating?

No whistles were harmed in the transmission of this communication.
