brass vs. aluminum

Post by Lawrence »

I want to add a Hoover Low G whistle to my small collection. I really like the sound of his brass Low G. However, I can't find a sound file for the aluminum whistle.

Does anyone have any sound clips they can share?

I'd also appreciate some opinions of brass vs. aluminum.
The Hoover brass Low G is all brass. The aluminum whistle has a CPVC Whitecap.

Thanks.

I am partial to the nickel versions of several whistles, maybe include that in the poll?

I like the nickel as well. I voted for brass. My favorite whistle is my nickel Clare D. I like them all for different times and tunes.

Brass -vs- Aluminum

Post by billw »

When I look at waveform envelopes of the SunSinger A in brass, and again in aluminum, the higher frequencies are a little (a couple percent) more pronounced in aluminum than in brass. I cannot actually hear any significant difference, but it is evidently there, and depending on your individual ears, you may be able to tell.

I would suggest requesting an approval before deciding.

I find nickel too slippy to hold comfortably. I didn't get on with the only aluminium whistle I have (a Walton LBW) - but then I don't get on with Walton D mouthpieces very well anyway (except mellow D) so maybe it wasn't the ally that was the problem.

My faves are brass every time.

Hmmm, not getting to many replies. Would it help if I mention that I have no idea who Davy Spillane is?

I have a few in aluminum and the sound is clear and fine. Only problem with alum. is getting it warm and keeping it warm. Condensation (spittal) buildup in the fipple if its too cold. Sounds much better warm. A little lighter than brass, I think, weight wise but not a problem for me holding either.

Low G is a fine whistle. I have a Burke ALPRO and love it. I've read much about Hoover's CPVC White Cap and it sounds great (the idea - never actually "heard" it). I'm also thinking of a Hoover in Low G and will probably go for the white cap. Check out his web site for a good read. Might some sound be samples also, I can't recall. Can't check now either or I'll lose this.

Wood-- no big surprise here!

Let me hasten to say though, that I have whistles by the likes of Thin/Water Weasel, Burke, Serpent,Parkhurst ,Generation, Feadog, Clarke, Sweetone, Sindt et al, in materials ranging from steel, copper, brass, resin composite, and PVC and love them all for different reasons.
Got wood?

:o :o :o
Brass is to heavy, wood is unstable, Wood with brass iner tube works well, Copper turns black&green. and nickel smells funny, but would be fine plated.
So that just leaves Good old Aluminum, cold! sit on it Potsie :P

ps
But only with Albanite fipple plugs.

And steel. And sterling. Either one works fine for me. Gold's probably good too, but i'll never be able to afford that.

Whattabout Big Bill Bronzes, Corny Copia Coppah', Magic Mushroom Magnesium (aka DayGlo Elektron), Titanic Tintagel Titanium, Zany Zaphor Zinc and, not to forget it, Kool Kartoon Kryptonite?
I want one of each :D

PS: I'm partial to brass, copper, bronze and nickel-silver. Voted such. Cu-Cu syndrom, in a way, but for the Gallicists ;)
Woodpecker, too.

IMHO brass ages better, doesn't give you black alu oxide marks on your fingers and sounds nice too. It's also seems easier to warm up as the walls are thinner. Carbon fibre would be nice though :)
