OT: favorite non-Irish music?

A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Other than Irish, what kind of music do you listen to the most?

OT: favorite non-Irish music?

Post by feadogin »

Hi,

This is my first time posting a topic, and it's kind of irrelevant, but oh, well. Pitchfork's recent comment about liking Miles Davis has made me realize what a well-rounded group of people pipers are, so I was just wondering about this.

gotta agree with Pitchfork about whisky and Miles Davis. Throw in Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf and now you're cookin'. oooooooohhhh smokestack lightnin'.... 8)

I do like other kinds of traditional music from Europe, Africa, and Asia, but I listen almost exclusively to irish trad. Too much to learn, too little time.

When I was in college about 10 years ago, Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" was that recording that EVERYONE had to have. That and the Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits. :)

I mostly listen to Jazz, but I like everything, even opera.

I listen to Irish music almost exclusively, but classical music is my next choice. I also like old big band music ala Glenn Miller, etc.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

99.9% Irish and Scottish traditional. Mostly Irish because that's what I mostly have CDs of.

I hardly ever listen to recorded Irish music anymore....I guess I get enough doing band work, playing at sessions or just playing at home alone....anyway, I have always preferred it live.

Funnily enough, I often tune into WDVX bluegrass radio on the internet. It used to be broadcast from a trailer ("caravan" in Oz) in Knoxville Tn. but I think they've moved into something a little larger.
One of their announcers used to sound like Dolly Parton on speed..hilarious :boggle:

Great station, with some great music.

"There's only two kinds of music...good and bad."

--Duke Ellington

....and you'll find both in every idom.

P.S. Stevie Wonder, Doc Watson, Debussy, Neko Case.
