The C&F 2003 End-of-Year Inexpensive Whistle Poll

Post by Walden »

On the C&F main site it speaks of the 1999 poll of inexpensive whistles. It seems a good idea to take a new poll to see where C&F members' preference, among the less expensive mass-produced whistles currently lies.

This poll is open until 31 December 2003.

If you list Susato, isn't Dixon in the same price range? I'd vote for dixon.

Well, after bouncing back and forth between Sweetones and Clarkes, I really had to go with the Clarkes... The tone is just so mellow and airy, I love it

At the Whistle Shop, the Susato D runs $14.50, whereas the Dixon D runs $19, putting it over the price I considered inexpensive.

I had it as an option, but it said I had too many poll options, so I had to narrow it down to be included with Waltons, in general. I contemplated combining Meg and Sweetone as one option instead, but the Mellow D is technically a Walton, and the Meg is not technically a Sweetone.

Oh, all right. I'll let it slide, this time. :)

Same goes for the Eagle 2 piece Clare, the Generation Folk, and the Acorn... just not enough poll positions.

I voted Gens, because you said all things considered; but it was a close call with Feadogs (green & brass Mk IIIs).

I voted Oak; however, I think any whistle players collection oughta include at least one if not several of each of the whistles in your poll.

:)

I voted Waltons for the Mellow D and the Walton's C, which is an awesome whistle.

I agree with you on all counts, James. The problem is I have most of the cheap whistles already (multiples of a lot of 'em) so even though I'm trying to stick to the mid-range in prices my WhOA is getting expensive.

Now if I just had the skill to go with them . . .

I voted for Gens but I was torn between that and the Feadog. I also like my little black whistle very much. My favorite isn't on there either. I love my Feadan. I think it may be similar to a Clare but I have never seen or played a Clare.

I have severe issues with the Feadóg. The one that I had was so bad out of the box that even Jerry Freeman couldn't tweak it.

Ron - Clares are closest to Generation in terms of sound, I think, but have better quality control. You should really try one. I've had two and loved them both.

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

I like my Oak best but I admire the Sausato for its out of the box readinesss to be played.

Actually my fav "cheapie" is a Gen tube with a Whitecap. But that's a $40 whistle.
