The English language used in America doesn't let the words come to their proper use.
The various Indian, Native American, First Nations (take you pick at the word) in the United States are nations. Unfortunately they all get lumped together with the formerly mentioned names given.
We have in this country, the Cherokee Nation.
The Sioux, Lakota or Dakota Nations. (More than one)
I'm 1/32nd Sioux - it's not much but I recognize it and it's importance.
The Inuit (Commonly called Eskimos).
And countless others of Nations within this country...
Maybe Walden could direct us to a list.
The term nations deals with a related peoples. In Hebrew, the word Am is used for nation and it is very clear in it's meaning. Probably similar in Arabic.
Nation deals with a race of your birth, whereas country refers to the expanse of land.
http://www.m-w.com Merriam-Webster has definitions for the words.
The point, Scotland is a nation.

This is absolutely correct, a nation is a people group, and not a territory. The passage which says "nation shall rise against nation," speaks as much of the evils of racial and ethnic conflict as of warfare between sovereignties. I, like many others, am a member of the Cherokee Nation and also of Scottish ancestry, as many Scots married into the Cherokee Nation in the colonial period, and soon thereafter. Perhaps there is a certain bond between the two peoples that drew them together. Today, besides the Cherokee Nation, and the Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, in Oklahoma, there are the Eastern Band of Cherokees, who managed to remain in the homeland at the time of the Trail of Tears, as I understand.Daniel_Bingamon wrote:The various Indian, Native American, First Nations (take you pick at the word) in the United States are nations. Stef pat What a shame you didn't manage to drive 45 miles down the A1 to Berwickshire where a warm welcome would have met you. I'd have given you Haggis and neeps and a dram.
