High end High G whistle ... Is there such a thing??

Post by piperdave »

Well I've been doing a bit of searching and I haven't run across a high end High G whistle. Anybody else have any luck in that department?

I could've sworn that Glenn Schultz made a high end high G whistle.

I've seen a high G Thin Weasel. 'Twas way too small for my big, clumsy fingers. But when someone with suitably thin fingers played it, it was a beautiful instrument.

My guess is Glenn doesn't make too many, but would make one if you ordered it.

As far as I know, the highest Water Weasel is an E. (Though I vaguely remember hearing of a high F once.)

Oh yeah, what do you need a high G for? I havent found much call for them myself, since most G tunes you can play on a D whistles, and their rarity in the high end whistle market could show that they arent in high demand. Im just curious.

Or calling back the dog...

This reminds me of the origins of the high F whistle--but there's a more adequate thread.

I have one of Glenn's high G's and it's a thing of rare beauty. Walls so thin it's hard to imagine turning them. Glenn couldn't find tubing the right size for the tuning slide, so he turns it himself from stainless steel. A tour de force of the whistlemaker's art.

Before going high end, try a Generation high G. I've got one and it's pretty damn good. My only probably is fitting my fingers in that small of a space.

Good luck.

High G

Post by selkie »

I've just been playing my High G Elfsong Sassy Brass whistle. I was lucky enough to be chosen to do a review on it. I love it and find it easy to play. I've also got a Victorian pure brass whistle with lead fipple which plays well but tastes vile and isn't safe to play really.

To answer the question, why?

Post by The Weekenders »

I wanted an in-tune high G to play on my arrangement of the Spanish national anthem, Marche Real. Our historical group has the trumpet doing lead and I harmonized a fife-y counterpart. In the same group, we do a tune called the Black Joke, slightly different than the trad version, that was known to be played in Mexico in the late 1700s. Since we do music of California from 1770s on, we play it. I am too lazy and old to work up and embrouchure to do real fifing so you get the idea.....I use a D but need the high G.

Pretty esoteric. And, everyonce in a while, there is the odd low G tune that I would just like punch above the (Irish-Scots) band sound. I think Cold Frosty morning would be great up there. I play it on the low G.

I have two high G Gens that are just too harsh and out of tune to mix with other players. I ordered a high G from Mike Burke, but it seems that he only makes em about once a year, so after 4 months of waiting this Spring and Summer, I gave up and cancelled the order. He is going to notify me when its time to make some more....

So its obviously not pressing but I still want one...
