Imitation Ivory Supplier?

Post by Aonach »

Can anybody give me a contact or link to a North American supplier of imitation ivory suitable for turning on a lathe (other than tagua nuts)?

Thanks in advance!

Woodcraft Supply in Provo Utah have it. You can get a catalog from them for $3, I think.

I am pretty sure Kevin meant Craft Supplies in Provo, Utah (webpage is
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/). Woodcraft does not carry it. On their website you can search for "ivory" and find it, order it online.

Acrylester?

ACRYLESTER?!??

So, acrylic and polyester individually aren't faux enough?

Stuart

I can see it now . . . uilleann pipes on QVC.

"These pipes are hand-finished in our factories in Southeast Asia of genuine Ebonique™ with Nickellette™ ferrules and keywork and Acrylester projecting mounts."

"That's right, Bob! And wait until you try the Cane-elle™ reeds!"

Now, there's a better grade of phony ivory to be had then the Craft Supplies stuff - thanks, John, for correcting me on the name - made in Europe, Rogge and Woofe use it, as well as various Highland pipe manafacturers. How do you get ahold of that stuff?
There was a thread where Kevin Popejoy spoke of making his own erzatz ivory, howzabout some discussion of that.
Also - why is mammoth ivory so frickin' expensive? Has the price been inflated due to the prices elephant ivory commands, or is it really that scarce? I read in a book on mammoths that there are an estimated 10 million tusks in the ground in Siberia - minimum.
How expensive? I spent $650 on a tusk, so my regulators matched my old chanter and drones. Good thing I'm crazy, blaluguhghlalughhh! Image

"Popejoy." You should name your son "Luther"! Lots of ironic potential there.

Here's a good one, from insultmonger.com's "Auto-Flamer" feature:

Getting back to the topic of ersatz materials, I'd like some advice from all you modern people in the USA, please.

If I used a Lycra popping strap would I be able to stretch and bend notes like Davy Spillane?

Or you could use natural hide. I hear nude piping is all the rage in some countries. If you're bashful, just cut a hole in your pantleg. :D
